my girlie loves her fishing rod thing. she has completely decimated the fish and it's no longer attached to the stringgrin do.now she just plays with the string on a stick.

she has rattly balls and a feathery hessian thing but since i got her this string on a stick she isn't interested in anything else!

will she get bored just playing with the same toy?

what are your best toy suggestions? shop bought or homemade? smile

deliasmithy Mon 17-Jun-13 19:56:11

Fishing rod and fish x 2 are now mauled fish with one eye each and no rods.

The crinkly pink and zebra striped tunnel my mum got fir me as a joke is sadly a firm favourite.

cozietoesie Mon 17-Jun-13 19:58:19

Small teddies - always were and I reckon always will be. Sourced from various places - eg ebay, cheap key rings from pound shops and the kiddies' toy bins from charity shops.

itsnothingoriginal Mon 17-Jun-13 20:08:36

Mine is also going for the fishing rod thingy but best toy at the moment is her ball!!

I was looking for some more today but there is a bewildering assortment out there confused no idea what else to try. She doesn't like anything with bells in seemingly..

GemmaTeller Mon 17-Jun-13 20:10:52

Ping pong balls, my tape measure and emery boards.

cozietoesie Mon 17-Jun-13 20:14:31

Small bouncy foam balls if you can get them, itsnothing.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts Mon 17-Jun-13 20:17:49

she was playing with a pretend plastic lemon from my kids tea set yesterday grin

someone suggested rolling some carpet offcut up into a makeshift tunnel. might see if i can get hold of some.

itsnothingoriginal Mon 17-Jun-13 20:55:25

Ooh some good ideas! Also we've just had a good half hour of fun with a paper bag. It's exhausting trying to keep them entertained isn't it!!

RandomMess Mon 17-Jun-13 20:58:07

ONe of the lazer light things. Click the button and they sit there looking for it - they so know it's us turning it off and on!

Redbindy Mon 17-Jun-13 21:00:05

What Random said. They love it.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts Mon 17-Jun-13 21:02:08

oh i saw one of those the other day. dh pulled a hmm at me so i didn't buy it. ill go back this week grin

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts Mon 17-Jun-13 21:02:37

my cat wants to play all the time so i need to get more toys.

Ginformation Mon 17-Jun-13 21:03:27

Bits of paper or tin foil rolled up and lobbed up the stairs (girl Gincat makes a great goalkeeper), dried leaves from the palm house plant, cardboard boxes, valerian tea bags (boy Gincat goes NUTS for this if he can get his paws on it, we have to make sure the cupboard is wedged shut!)

chickensaladagain Mon 17-Jun-13 21:07:48

Laser pen -hours of fun

If they can't persuade anyone to play with it then, in order of preference

My shoelaces
My hair
The tag on the zip on my work coat
My dressing gown cord
The curtains
The waste paper bin in the living room
Hair bobbles
Toilet roll tube

There is a pile of cat toys but they never touch them

SkaffenAmtiskaw Mon 17-Jun-13 21:08:12

laser pointer. They just go crazy for it. Or the plastic thing from Kinder eggs.

RandomMess Mon 17-Jun-13 21:10:15

A cardboard box...

boofted Mon 17-Jun-13 21:52:44

Laser pointers are great. 2 of mine love them but one doesn't get it at all. He loves the little grey or white mice you get in packs of 3 and some things that look like the skin of a mouse without stuffing. He also has a tiny seahorse. He'll bring them all up to bed at night one by one and then bring them all back down in the morning. doesn't know he's a cat.

crazynanna Mon 17-Jun-13 21:57:00

A red/white stripey cheap carrier bag from the local shop tied into a ball wink

MrsPresley Mon 17-Jun-13 22:08:03

My cat likes scrunched up receipts, even though she has loads of toys hmm

She also stole the end of a packet of polos (maybe about 5 left) out my bag and has been playing quite happily with it for the past 3 weeks or so.

There is a couple of pics of her on my profile, she looks like butter wouldn't melt but she is a little bugger most of the time grin

joey99 Mon 17-Jun-13 22:25:00

mine loves pipe cleaners as she can really easily flick them in the air etc. Also tiny soft toys like Mcdonalds ones etc. The only actual cat toys she likes are the feather on a stick thing and ping pong ball type of lightweight balls

bonzo77 Mon 17-Jun-13 22:31:13

Rubber bands
Hair elastics
Leaves
catnip turd

deliasmithy Mon 17-Jun-13 23:06:39

Foil blanket

deliasmithy Mon 17-Jun-13 23:09:19

You have to be careful with actual string, elastic bands, hair bands etc as if they have pica they will ingest all of these. Mine has this and would regularly sit eating string etc and luckily vomited it up each time. She ingests foil and shoe laces when she can.

deliasmithy Mon 17-Jun-13 23:14:21

Q tips get stolen a lot here.
The washing basket is a cat fort.
The bannisters and clothes horse are gymnastics equipment.
anything that forms a tunnel is exciting.

Essexgirlupnorth Mon 17-Jun-13 23:14:25

One of my kittens steals hair bands from my bed side table and they seem to be here favourite toys. Also ping pop balls, mice on a string and a laser pointer.

Lightweight spongy balls she can dribble around the apartment. Her little pink mice which get carried around like prey then stashed. As do my rings grin

Her cat tree is her fave tho. She is like a wild monkey swinging off that ha ha.

soimpressed Mon 17-Jun-13 23:24:27

My cat loves pipe cleaners and gets very excited when she sees the craft box coming down. She fishes them out with her paw and plays with them until they disappear under the fridge.

Her other favourite game is patting stuff off the table. She seems fascinated watching things fall.

jessjessjess Mon 17-Jun-13 23:30:23

H works in events and our cat is obsessed with the lanyards he brings home. Other favourites: the yellow plastic things from inside Kinder eggs, raffia mice, laser pointer and those plastic cup things you put detergent in.

Cherryberries Tue 18-Jun-13 01:25:56

We have only had our first kitten a week and have got some toys etc but I agree with chickensalad, she far prefers an old shoelace and her absolute favourite is a little ball of tin foil.Must try toilet roll tubes etc also.

I have a cat who steals and stashes schuncie hairbands. I have watched him reach into my handbag before and fish one out. He had no way of knowing it was there so can only guess he could smell it.
Departed cat also loved them and my cousins cat does too!

NatashaBee Tue 18-Jun-13 02:00:00

My toes hmm don't advise them as a toy though!

MinkyWinky Tue 18-Jun-13 10:13:34

Ours both like a long ribbon from a chocolate box, one likes chasing finger shadows and both like 'mousey' www.petsathome.com/shop/catnip-felt-friend-by-petstages-106851 which is about as long as they are and is great when they're in a disemboweling mood. (Much better then having my arm shredded grin)

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts Tue 18-Jun-13 17:35:27

i am now going to get a pipe cleaner from dds art box, some tin foil and a toilet roll tube.

anyone got any sticky back plastic? grin

girliefriend Tue 18-Jun-13 17:41:12

My cats favourite toy started out life as one of dds many soft toys!! Its a black and white kitten and my cat loves it grin I think he thinks its his baby and plays with it all the time, even takes it to bed with him!!

redrubyshoes Tue 18-Jun-13 17:44:36

A spring from an old Hoover - he loved it and would retrieve it from under sofas, behind curtains etc and if he couldn't find it he would yowl until we hunted it down and handed it back.

A bloody spring I tell ya! hmm

Fluffycloudland77 Tue 18-Jun-13 19:54:55

New potatoes, they roll un-evenly and moves about more than a round ball which is apparently very cheeky of them.

Tail feathers, I pick them up if I see them. People must think I'm weird.

A pen/stick sliding from under an opened out magazine or newspaper. You have to be quick or he gets your hand though.

ZebraOwl Wed 19-Jun-13 00:54:53

Mine both love playing in cardboard boxes & large paper bags.

Little mouse toys are VERY popular here: I got these ones this morning & the boys, having played with them independently on & off all day spent a happy half hour before their tea chasing after them as I lobbed them about the hall for them. The game only stopped because my joints were protesting too much for me to continue...

Mr Nijinsky loves toys made from sisal while Mr Balanchine has a particular fondness for pom-poms.

Both of them love the Sticks With Things On A String sort of toys. Because of my wonky joints I can't always manage to play with those so I got a wee cuddly duck on elastic that you fix to the doorframe each time.

Lots of my cats' toys were hand-me-downs (paw-me-downs?) from friends' cats. They weren't too fussed about the kickeroo though it does get played with, but the various jingly mice from the same parcel are much loved.

It's good to swap toys in & out when you check them over to be sure they're still safe as that way they seems Fresh And New - though leaving any Special Favourites in the mix all the time so the moglets don't get upset by their having vanished...

Pancakeflipper Wed 19-Jun-13 01:02:14

My hair bobbles/bands. And my boys little bouncy balls. Cat goes bonkers in the hallway with those

weebleknievel Wed 19-Jun-13 02:49:23

The plastic bits out of kinder eggs, ours has 4 on the go, won't play with anything we buy her!

redrubyshoes Wed 19-Jun-13 16:03:30

One of my old cats used to walk up and down the road retrieving the elastic bands the postman dropped. I found a stack of them behind a cupboard once.

VenusUprising Wed 19-Jun-13 20:09:34

My cat loves eating those rubber bands, so I hope your cats stash were au naturel, and not encased in anything redruby
smile

Our cat loves cheap long straws, cheap craft Pom poms, especially if they're sparkly, fishing rods which have been refitted with feathers from the park.

And string, any kind of string - she loves to eat it, and it's pretty horrific if it dangles.... Boke.

She also loves her cheese wedge, and any kind of tunnel.

But mostly she loves playing fetch with her little pom pom balls, or jump with the fishing rods, or chase with the straws, or tear around with the laser pointer.

usualsuspect Wed 19-Jun-13 20:13:40

Ping pong ball
Shoelace
little plastics yellow mouse, but he's lost that somewhere.
Tunnel thing

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts Wed 19-Jun-13 21:00:24

i have made a tin foil ball... she loves it!! grin

I've got her a pipe cleaner and a craft pomp pomp thing too. all these things i have and never realised they were makeshift cat toys! grin

Cherryberries Thu 20-Jun-13 12:09:15

The tinfoil ball is incredible isnt it coconuts? So simple and they love it.I have an assortment of different size tinfoil balls scattered all over the place now.grin.

Tricycletops Thu 20-Jun-13 15:12:58

Things On A String On A Stick are very popular here, especially if they involve feathers which he can rip off. MIL brings these from a pet shop near them and they last about 3 days...

My mum bought him a length of upholstery cord from a fabric shop and it's his all-time favourite toy - he carries it about the house with him.

ceara Thu 20-Jun-13 19:04:11

Laser pen is top toy
Ping pong balls, when we fish them back out from under the sofa where he puts them
Fishing rod, as toys and also as a comfort toy which he drags around and goes to sleep with
Also, sadly, any unwary birds he catches and kills. But he is not allowed to bring prey into the house to play with. Little sh#t plays with them in full view of the living room window instead.

BerylStreep Fri 21-Jun-13 13:03:06

Pink furry pencil case with catnip inside.

Dumpylump Fri 21-Jun-13 13:10:02

Her absolute favourite? The dog. He's a chihuahua, smaller than her, and I'm not sure that she actually knows he's a dog...but she torments him, jumps out at him unexpectedly and rolls about on the floor with him. It is very funny. Other dog (bigger), watches in disgust grin

QueenStromba Fri 21-Jun-13 13:18:26

My cat loves her kat tickler - plays with it every night when we go to bed and some morning. She also likes her kickaroo and loves stealing straws from my drink to play with.
