Shocked and upset as just discovered that lovely secondhand Siamboy has wee'd on teenage DD's bed this morning!

Have stripped the bed, mattress scrubbed and outside drying (it's memory foam though so think it may have to be binned), duvet sheets and affected soft toys all in the machine washing.

Why has he done this? He is 5 and has never ever done anything like this before. He's also been very happy, cuddly, affectionate and sleeping in my arms on my bed so just don't understand what's caused this at all.

Any tips on how to avoid this happening again, I just can't have him him pissing on the kids beds!

Have ordered a Feliway plug in diffuser - do they work?

When did he last see the vet? (That's most unusual for a healthy Siamese.) Oh - and how many trays does he have? Might he have to go some way to reach one?

Is his litter tray clean? Some cats will go on an absorbent surface like a bed if their tray is dirty. Has anything unusual happened recently that might hav made him want to mark territory?

He's in perfect health, no recent vet visit but friend who is a vet sees him regularly and remarks what a healthy specimen he is.

He has one very large covered litter tray cited by the back door where it has always been. He's an only cat so no 'sharing' issues.

DD is his favourite person, he washes her like she is his kitten and wraps himself around her neck. She's been away for 5 days on a trip which he won't have liked but she's been away before and he hasn't done this.

I have recently (last month or so) started putting a layer of white litter crystals in the bottom of his tray and then cover this over with a thick layer of his usual recycled newspaper litter. It makes a scrunch noise when he goes in there now which I'm not sure he likes. Could it be this?

Could be a combination of the crunchy litter sound and DD being away. Perhaps try the tray without the crystals and see or try putting a second tray out without the crystals and see which one he opts for. It'll give you an idea of whether it's the litter he dislikes.

I've only had two occasions when Siamese had an accident which could have been avoided. In one case, the tray was too far from bed and he didn't like its location anyway, and in the other, the kitten refused to use wood pellet litter. They may have been 'protests' but I just gave in directly. I pick my battles.

I'm guessing stress related at your daughter being away.

My cat had a few little accidents like this. Took her to the vet and she said certain cats, when stressed, find the thing that most smells like their human and wee on it. For us, it was our couch. Lovely!

Right, DD bed now ready for her to sleep in again. £169 paid out for a new mattress though!

Have changed the litter tray back to his usual litter only and fed the little mobster some poached chicken for his supper.

He's lying snuggled up to DH now, looking happy and smug as per usual.

I had this problem, it's a pain. put a plastic sheet under the mattress protector to protect the new mattress, when washing duvet and sheets add some white vinegar, this really seems to take the scent away.

I feel your pain! We have just had similar with one of ours: $600 of tests later, there's nothing physiological wrong with him, so it must be behavioural. We have taken a belt, braces and extra belt approach to changing his behaviour, which seems to be working so far:

Feliway spray
pheremone collar
new litter tray in the room he wants to use (bathroom)
new litter tray in the usual place
special "Cat Attract" litter in the usual place (normal in the other one)

Sounds like your DCat is missing DD.

Thanks all. No further incidents so far, but have taken to making sure all the bedroom doors are closed during the day when the DC are out.

He definitely prefers the tray with the recycled paper litter only so I'm hoping it was a dirty protest at the addition of the nasty, noisy litter crystals. That will teach me to try and improve things!
