The litter tray

What is this?! (A bit gross)

We got a new kitten on Monday. All is well and he's settling in just fine. I haven't had a cat for years and years so quite new to this.

I took him to the vet today to be checked over and all looked fine. She couldn't see any fleas and she gave him his first jabs and worming tablet. I was concerned as he was born on a farm and allowed outside (but slept inside).

He's just done a poo in his litter tray (solid) but I noticed some smeary poo just outside the tray then THIS on the floor with a bit more in his bum! Is it a tapeworm (or roundworm). I googled and it said a tapeworm can look like spaghetti. Eugh! Is that what it is??

So what do I do?! I have 2 DC's. Do I wash the cushion he sleeps on? Mop the floor? How do I disinfect safely? I bought a spray for the litter tray which I used to clean it up with. At the moment he is confined to the kitchen. I'm weaning him onto better quality dry food at the mo. Will he be more or less hungry?

What is this?! (A bit gross)

Be pleased that the worming meds have worked.

Yep, looks like a worm of some kind.

Contact the vet who gave you the treatment and ask for more advice. It may be that passing the worm is a normal effect of the treatment she's given.

The tablet was given about 4 hours ago. So that would make it expel the worm?

Could you give me any advice on what to disinfect with safely?

TBH I would clean the floor with whatever method you normally would following a pooh on the floor. It being a dead worm makes no difference. No one can catch anything from it

It looks like a worm from here. I don't think you need to disinfect.

Poor little kitten.

I saw that the other day after my cat had been wormed about a week before - I assume it's a worm and the meds have worked. as he wasn't wormed before or a year ago.

I don't think it can harm you. I believe that parasites are very host specific and so ones that infect cats won't affect us.

I remember a vet once reassuring me with the words 'you could have them on toast and it wouldn't affect you'

Shipwrecked - UGH at that comment from the vets... Grin did they get them confused with spaghetti on toast?!
