Stronghold seems evil what are the alternatives?

We pay our vet monthly for regular flea and working treatments and a reduction in other costs. The flea treatment we get them them is stronghold - one of our cats seems to literally pull chunks of her hair out after applying it - she even has a scab this time. I'm pretty sure it's the stronghold causing some kind of irritation and I'd like to stop using it (have also heard it's crap).

What alternatives are there? We have two csts and they spend a lot of time outdoors do definitely need regular treatment.

Stronghold is one of the best. You could also try Advantage, Advocate or Broadline.

Sorry to be dim but can i just buy those at a pet shop or are they more like a prescription thing?

Anything you can just buy off the shelf won't work and could even kill your cat. However you can buy Advantage and Stronghold (I think) in chemists, but you have to ask the pharmacist for them, and in Pets at Home, but then again a special person needs to sell them to you and you need to sign stuff - it's not off the shelf.

Advocate and Broadline can, I think, only be bought from vets.
