The litter tray

9.5 week old kitten limping

One of our kittens is limping - she's clearly hurt her left front leg :( She's 9 1/2 weeks old and just indoors at the moment, so she must have hurt it when she was playing, jumping or fighting with her brother.

Do we need to take her to the vet? It's only the emergency service now so maybe we could wait until Monday and take her then if she's not better?

Sunday pets at home vet? Best to get it checked with such young kits

Has she been bitten and is there any blood?

When my cat was limping we saw blood and his sister had chomped on him. Also happened out of hours - 11pm on a Saturday.

You need to phone. You can not leave a kitten in pain for 2 days!

Cats' limping should always be taken seriously in my view - they don't usually 'malinger'. She might have just pulled something and be favouring a leg but if she's still limping in the morning, I'd vet her.

Thanks Fluffy, had forgotten the Pets at Home vet was open on a Sunday. If she's still limping in the morning we'll take her first thing (just need to remember the clocks are going back!) We think she might possibly have dislocated it. No blood or anything - we have been watching the two of them carefully when they fight, and they haven't drawn blood thankfully.

We took her to the vet who said it's an infection and must have been a bite that went too deep. She had a temperature so the vet's put her on antibiotics. So glad we went, thanks everyone for the advice!

I'm glad you took her too! Some people wait until they are clearly unwell.

Well done for taking her in so promptly.

Has the limping eased any?

Yes she was already limping much less on Saturday afternoon/eve, and today she's running around normally - her usual crazy self! :)

PS Meant Sunday afternoon/eve, not Saturday! x

Good - although you'll maybe need to keep a close eye on the lad to check that he doesn't try for another fly nibble.

Yes we do watch them carefully when they're fighting, but we obviously can't supervise them all the time, so I worry what they get up to when we're not around!

Out of interest when would you separate fighting kittens? I've been looking out for miaowing or biting - it's hard to tell what's ok and what isn't, though. You'd think the kittens would learn when to walk away!
