The litter tray

Considering a kitten (or 2!), first timers advise please

Youngest dd (6) is completely animal obsessed and both dds have been desperate for a pet for years. After much deliberation, dh, who is allergic to cats is now relenting and says we can get a kitten or even 2. Neither of us has ever owned a cat so have no idea about what's involved or the likely costs. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? I've read that some cats are less allergenic but these seem to be much more expensive and generally house cats which I'm not keen on given that the house will be empty during school hours 4 days a week. I don't want a lonely cat, hence considering siblings but have no idea of the average monthly cost. Also considering when might be a good time given that we've a couple of hols booked next year. I'd dearly love a cat but want to get all the facts before making a decision - don't want dh to regret it given that he's already willing to up his anti-histamines for us! Any advice gratefully received

Sorry more questions, is it possible to put a cat flap in French doors and how much might this cost?

Hi OP

Let's start with this thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/the_litter_tray/2197386-Adopting-a-kitten-advice-needed

which has two more threads linked within it. Both of these cover such things as set up and ongoing costs, insurance, neutering etc etc.

If you're getting kittens, then definitely get two as they can get really distressed on their own. But, as first-time cat owners, and with children, you might be better to get an adult cat from a rescue. The rescue will be able to point you towards a cat that would suit your circumstances (likes children for example).

The allergy thing is difficult. I know that people often report that they lose their allergy to their own cat, but remain allergic to other cats.

As for cat flaps in french doors - yet it's perfectly possibly. Is it a double glazed door? If you post a photo of it I might be able to give you an idea of how much it might cost.
