Ear mites

My boy cat has ear mites and they're really making him suffer. He's making himself cry out when scratching them. Already have ear drops but he's so sensitive about his ears it's high on impossible to get them in. I'm waiting until he's asleep but the second the lid is off the bottle, he smells it and then does a runner. A couple of times I've managed it but then he doesn't come near me for a while. Tried holding him while DP does it but not keen on that method - I'm fairly keen on keeping my arms and GoldenCat hates it.

Do you either have any tips for getting the drops in his ears or alternatives I could try. Ordered his flea treatment off VetsUK and saw one that is topical and claims also to treat ear mites. Do you know if that kind of product is effective? Going to the vets next week but in the meantime, advice is greatly appreciated.

Did you get it off the vet? It might not be ear mites.

My cat had ear mites before, & had the drops from the vet, I had to wrap her in a towel to begin with, she hated it but it has to be done! It got easier after a few days, she realised I wasn't giving up & that it wasn't actually too bad. Did it as part of morning routine - caught her, did her ears, fed her. Having her on a firm surface with a towel to sit on seemed to help, & held her neck scruff gently (like cats do to their kittens - sort of "do as you're told!") to get her to settle down. Then lots of praise & stroking once she behaved!

I've never used this on cats but I have used it for my dog and it's a miracle product for mites! Seriously, read the reviews across t'internet. It says it can be used for cats, too.

Thanks for the replies.
Ear drops are OTC so it could be something other than ear mites but the problem is less that the drops aren't working, just that I can't get them in his ears. The towel method is a good idea, might try that tomorrow!

Thanks for the recommendation on Thornit, reviews do sound good, especially if it does provide immediate relief.

Pets at home shops have vets open on Saturdays and Sundays if yours isn't open.

He mus be in quite a bit of pain to yelp.

OTC ear drops having nothing in them that will kill ear mites, if you use enough you might drown them.
Putting any kind of drop in a cats ear without knowing if the ear drum is intact can lead to long term damage.

Yikes! In that case I'll wait until he's been seen by the vet before I put anything else in there. Want to make him suffer less, not more
