Hello, I have just taken over the care of my son's one-year old male cat. He lives with his girlfriend and they have to move and are unable to take the cat. He has always been an indoor cat and I have the time to devote to him through the week. However I am not around at weekends from about Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. My son has offered to come in to feed the cat and change his litter tray but is this too long for him to be left? I feel so guilty about it but thought it would be better for me to take him rather than go to a pet shelter and perhaps not be rehomed - he is only an ordinary moggy but I think he is beautiful. Thanks all - I really don't want to be cruel to him.

Can your son give him some time for a little play/cuddle as well? I would have thought that would be OK for him if he's getting full love during the week and is having his food and tray cleaned.

It's really difficult, I think that is a little long. Could your son not stay the Saturday night or something? Or what about getting him a friend?

He's definitely better off with you than in a shelter. I don't expect he'll like being alone for that amount of time, but it's not the end of the world. If he's the sort of cat that likes other cats then I agree a companion could be a good idea.

That can sleep for up to 18 hours a day too, any chance of him becoming an outdoor cat with a Catflap? That would reduce boredom and he could potter in and out to see others when he fancied?
