Gifts of empty cat food wrappers (not mine)

I should probably be glad I'm not getting half eaten animals really but recently my 1 year old cat has taken to bringing home 'gifts' of empty cat food packets! First was a couple of weeks ago. DP and I were on the sofa watching TV when we heard the cat flap go a couple of times - Benny coming in and going out a couple of times, then he was half way through and scratching at something out the door. Eventually he finally managed to get his prize through and came running through the living room parading it around like a trophy - an empty Dreamies wrapper. He ran upstairs and left it by our bed. Thanks kitty!

This morning, came down to find another sparkly foil packet, this time an empty Goody Bag wrapper! Is this his way of letting us know he hates our choice of food?! He seems happy enough to eat it and he's definitely not going hungry. He is drawn to shiny things anyway and the wrappers smelling of food can only increase the appeal but I don't know where he's getting them. He's either being fed by somebody else and stealing the wrapper or raiding bins. I don't want to have a bin raider that the neighbours hate! I've never seen signs of rubbish strewn across gardens or the street and he doesn't go through our bin. What do you reckon of this?!

Or someone has started leaving their kitchen window open from time to time with the better weather and he's cutting out the middleman and nicking straight from their work surface? (The Lodger used to go into people's houses and thieve straight from there: he used to come home with lamb chops and goodness know what.)

He's bringing you home the remains of his 'kill' as a present - they may or may not have originally contained some treats which he ate. I suppose you have to be thankful that there's not a half-gutted vole on your pillow.

Do you know of any other cat owners in the vicinity?

There are a couple of other cats on our street who also have free range so he's probably sneaking in their cat flap. Both packets have a lot of claw and teeth marks so it looks like he may be strealing them full and then attacking them until the treats come out.

Definitely better than a dead vole though! I just feel guilty for whoever he's robbing!

They should get themselves Sureflaps.

Whenever you feel guilty, think of the people from whom a previous poster's cat stole a whole freshly cooked ham one Xmas (if I recall.) And got it back through the cat flap!

I may have misremembered but some of the cats belonging to posters on this board have returned with quite extraordinary items.

I do seem to have misremembered the cat flap - it was a 6ft fence he got it over!

A ham?! That has made me literally lol! Perhaps I should draw up a wish list and get training him! Grin

Better than my most recent present, a half-dead collared dove. It had earlier flown into the window with a loud thud, I think the cat then found it stunned on the ground and brought it in to see if we could help it. We couldn't. I can't look its mate in the eye when it comes to the bird table.

He had a smoked paprika pork chop last night as well, which I had been saving for my lunch today, but the tooth marks put me off a bit. I hasten to add he stole that from my own kitchen, I don't get him to steal me lunch from other people.

It's sweet he brings it home to you all proud of himself.

I've not had anything bought me since we moved. I saw the cat over the road with a mouse so he must love his owners more than mine does.

My neighbours who had just moved in once asked if we owned a black & white cat, as it had just been spotted stealing a rib-eye steak off their BBQ. It was my other neighbour's cat, thank goodness.
