The litter tray

Mr Cory went for vet! Now sedated! How do I calm a cat down?

Poor little Mr Cory, tabby love of my life, has an overactive thyroid. Has gone from 9kg to barely 5kg. He was collected this am and taken to the vet for his blood test, from whence I received a phone call saying he had been sedated as was 'very very nervous'.

Mr Cory can be a little spirited ('couldn't be held'). Of the two of them, I dread to think what state of nerves the vet was in, to be honest.

I apologised fulsomely. But now the little cat is at home he is very jumpy, and staring saucer-eyed at the front door in case it happens again.

How do I calm him down? I have tried poached chicken, singing, declarations of love and just lying there companionably. He has eaten and had the strength to ask for extra Dreamies. Also the poor little boy has three huge shaved patches and I think they're itching.

I'd put on some low-volume music or telly, move calmly and slowly - but get on with things. I've found that they're reassured most by an adherence to the routine they know so maybe best to just be around but let him be to recover his equanimity.

Poor lad. When shall the blood results be back?

I would kind of keep things calm and no fuss - almost ignore him iykwim

let him come round in his own time

Thanks both, I have been doggedly sticking to the normal snack-and-nap routine that we both like. The singing was rather an aberration, hem. I shall stay in tomorrow and potter, he'll like that.

His results are back in a week, in the meantime he is on 10mg of carbimazole a day.

PS - Seniorboy had to go to the vet yesterday and she didn't even attempt to take bloods from him. She made reference to that even - 'Oh you're a fine one as long as we don't try to take blood from you, eh?'

Which he was. Flirting outrageously with her. (Good job She Who Must Be Obeyed the Chief Practice Nurse wasn't present!)

Cozie - Seniorboy is a gentleman who knows his own mind! A cultivated, debonair man about town, by the sounds of things. I bet the vet loves him.

Good idea to potter - the best thing I've found is to maintain normality and not to give out vibes of agitation. (If you can do that.) Then leave them to it.

The vet does love him - but he's the particular favourite of the Chief Nurse.

(I spend my life carrying his box and being a mere adjunct in his progresses.)

They come back to us at night tho', eh.(I feel unpleasantly like Jerry Hall saying that about Mick Jagger.) Is Seniorboy well?

I tell myself that he loves me really. That may be whistling in the wind though.

He's pretty well - just elderly with some of the attendant issues.

jumpy and stating saucer eyed. Both classic symptoms of hyperthyroidism in humans - is it the same for cats? Have they told you to keep topping up the food because hyper means the metabolism goes into overdrive - not sure if it's the same for cats.

I think he'll be fine once he starts the meds. I was !

He sounds completely splendid, Cozie. It's no bad thing for that furry independent macho streak to get an outing every now and then....he's still trying to make you jealous even his dotage Grin
