Messy Kittens

I have sibling kittens, one boy, one girl. They're six months old now.

They are a bit dirty and I can't seem to stop it.

They use the litter tray every time, but they seem to stand in it, and trail it out of the room it's in. Luckily, it's tiled and cleans up easily, but it's starting to annoy me.

I've a big litter tray, so there's plenty of room. I clean it out when they poo in it as soon as I can, straightaway if I'm in, or as soon as I come in. The longest they've been left on their own is about four hours without it being cleared out.

I've tried pellets, paper and Catsan seems to be the best for them. The pellets ended up all over the house. I've tried just putting a small amount of litter in, and putting a lot in.

Any advice?

I've heard boys are worse than girls. Our female is very neat and clean but our boy kittens think they are digging for treasure or playing sandpits.

No advice to offer really, just keep doing what you're doing. Kittens can be a massive pain in the arse but I totally adore them.

When you got them had they been toilet trained?

Do you see them pooing? Mine holds his bum higher for poos.

Are you also cleaning out the pee? Some cats don't like pooing on a place where there's pee (and scratching over afterwards) so get themselves right to the edge - and then miss or whatever.

I'd try getting another tray (you're going to need another soon anyway and its always a good idea to have a spare in the cupboard. I'd also try clumping litter. They often find that easier to manoeuvre.

They were fully trained and yes, I clean out the pee as well. No, I don't see them poo. I leave them their dignity.

I've no room for another tray, I'll try the clumping litter.

We lived near a black cat years ago who would do his poos on the gravel on the front of the house in full view of the world but if you opened the curtains he got very offended.

Cats are odd like that.

Strewth - no dignity in the cozie household. If things don't improve, keep an eye on them and see how they're doing it.

I'd also strongly recommend at least one more tray if they're to do their duty inside. One really isn't enough for two grown cats - even Seniorboy has two all to himself, both of which he uses as the mood takes him. Maybe think about how to be arranging things?

The trick is to catch them when they're already committed to the poo - if they're just thinking about it, they can stalk off in high dudgeon.

Try Cats Best litter (Pets at Home or online). It clumps brilliantly, doesn't track on paws and the grains are easily swept if they chucked over the side. It's natural and can be flushed away (although I don't).
Finding this perfect litter was a long journey, but we found it in the end.
