HAPPY NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY!

ZebraOwl · 31/10/2013 07:08

Today is National Black Cat Day & I am very excited that My Darling Black!Cat has been included in the Cats Protection National Black Cat Day 2013 poster Grin

Mr Nijinsky is the fourth picture from the right one row up from the bottom, snuggled up under my pink Royal Ballet crossover-top.

The reason for National Black Cat Day is that black cats & black-&-white cats are sadly less likely to be adopted than cats of other colours - the idea is to try to persuade people to consider adopting black[&white] cats & raise awareness of the fact that these lovely moglets are so often overlooked.

Does anyone else have a cat on the poster? And/or any tales (tails?) of their awesome black[&white] feline friends to relate.

And now, as my little black cat is plaintively meyowling "Mum" outside my door, being able to hear me type, I should be getting up to see to breakfast for my balletcats. I think perhaps something special may be in order, in celebration of NBCD...

Yay! I have 2 black toms (neutered). Black cats are all I've had all my adult life (grew up with a b&w dinner jacket mog). Love them Smile

How sweet is your balletcat? Gorgeous. My boys are a bit rougher around the edges. One is old and a bit scraggy (17), bless him. The other is a bigger, cuddlier chap (6).

I would attach a pic but I can't figure it out and can't be gaffes with profiles or weblinks. I thought we could now put them in post (I've seen s&b posts with pics) but can't see the function here.

I'm more of a MN lurker than poster, but this thread has drawn me out. Hurrah for black cats! And congratulations to zebracat for making he poster....very cool.

Blackcat is enjoying his day...from the comfort of the radiator.

Hurray for black cats! Our black boy is currently curled up fast asleep after wolfing down a tin of tuna. He's celebrated in style.

Our long-haired black cat with 4 white whiskers chose to move in here a few years ago. She's recovering from a dose of mange (!) at the moment so she has almost as many bald patches as black ones!

We have 2 black cats (adopted from someone else who was emigrating). I can imagine their reactions to me trilling 'Happy National Black Cat Day!' at them when I get home from work.
'Yeah right, whatever, now get us something to eat then sit your arse on the sofa so there's a lap available.'

Our beautiful black cat is asleep by radiator. When we got her 16 years ago, she was the longest stayer at Battersea Dogs Home (when still called that).

blackcathaireverywhere that's a great user name and completely true too Grin. We supposedly have cream sofas, cream carpets and cream curtains.

Thanks for starting the thread ZebraOwl and congratulations to Zebracat for getting on to the poster!

I lost both my darling cats, one black, the other black & white, to kidney disease this summer. When the time comes for me to adopt again I shall definitely be looking out for black/black & white beauties.

Yay! I have a beautiful 2 year old black female kitty who is currently playing with a giant leaf she has brought in from outside Smile we adopted her from a rescue place when she was 4 months old. She was the last of her litter left because we were told her colour out people off Sad I'd always wanted a black kitty though so we are very happy to have found her! (And she is very spoilt!)

Hooray ! My black fluffy cat is 15 so he is a little ginger and his under fur near his body is white. We thought we would lose him this year as he had hyperthyroidism an inflammatory mouth condition then a chest infection . He is much better now.

Hopelass I'm so glad you wanted the little black kitten! I didn't find out until about a year ago that black cats are less popular and it amazed and offended me. Lovely little house panthers, how could anyone not want them!

I'm horribly allergic to cats so I admire them from afar but there are 4 black cats & 1 tuxedo on my little street. I've no idea how the black cats' owners tell them apart.

We had 3 the same colour & breed, they all looked completely different to us.

I have two black cats in my bunch, u always have a black cat, ever since I was 14. I love them Grin

My male black is huge, fluffy, has claws that make people go all weak at the knees when he extends them, cuddly as hell, andis a total 5 dinner Sid... He's known all over the village.

My female is slinky and quiet, only cuddles me if she thinks no one is looking and is the only one out of the five allowed in our bedroom where she takes over my side of the bed every night

Gorgeous animals and it's such a shame people don't like them just because of their looks

We have three lovely black cats - mum and two of her daughters. They are so similar it is hard to tell them apart but I am so glad they are a part of our family. Someone asked me yesterday if it was our little black cat they kept seeing and when I said there were three of them they said that was why it seemed that the cat could teleport itself around.
I love my girls - our last cat was black with a white bib and whiskers - her all black son came with her from the rescue place and was sadly run over- we had her fifteen years. Prior to that we had another all black cat - there seems to be a bit of a theme here.

Our black kitten seems oblivious to this being her feast day so to speak. Love her to bits. She's a real rascal and holds her ground with the two older established feline matriarchs in the household. How blessed we are to have such lucky companions.

Thank you very much for being so nice about Jinny being included in the poster: CP basically asked anyone who owned a black cat to send them a photo & then picked ones out from what they were sent. I actually set up an Instagram account purely to do so - right at the last minute, too, was submitting photos at 2357 when the deadline was midnight!

I have to admit that my Look At My Cat Almost Being Famous smugness was greatly increased by the friend I challenged to find him on the poster saying she started by looking for the cat with the glossiest coat. (I'm a childless cripple, I have to take Pride in the small things. I win at life by brushing my hair some days - happily, on others, I win at life by doing a 1hr pointe class after having had to have almost 2 years off pointe...)

It is so nice to hear from other people who appreciate the awesomeness of black cats: it is such a shame people overlook black cats so often. Maybe Rescues should look at making would-be-adopters go through some kind of Blind Date style-process to encourage people to pick cats for their purrsonalities first rather than going on looks. Cat Number 1 is 6 months old; likes chasing their nemesis The Red Dot; cuddles with humans; walks in the garden; & would love to have a home with children. Cat Number 2 is 7 years old; needs an indoor home with children of their (human) age or older; & likes sunny windowsills, singing & taking uninterrupted naps.

Or perhaps to make black cats a more popular choice rescues could try marketing them as "lovely little house panthers" (splendid description of them, TheNunsOfGavarone). Or try for big celebrity endorsements? That trend for handbag dogs was very much celeb-driven, so if we could just make Rescue Cats (Preferably Black) The Next Big Thing we'd be sorted... I DID have to pick on looks alone when choosing my cats when they were tiny kittens but still picked my ninja-kitty. (Well, I picked one of the three black kittens in the litter, not sure if he was actually the one I picked but know I'd certainly not swap him for any other cat in the world!)

Black cats can often look very alike - but then, so can tabbies & gingers & siamese & burmese & bengals: I've a few times had a moment of shock thinking blond!cat has somehow teleported only to realise it's one of the local lightgingers bopping about!

When it comes to the subject of cat hairs everywhere, I have found that my two apparently divvy my clothing up so black!cat sheds on light & blonde!cat on dark. Sticky rollers are my friends Smile

Another black cat checking in here.

Mine is a tom, sleeps on his back, hips wide open, and if he still had his man bits they'd be on show.
He drinks water from my glass.
He pounces on my toes.
He can open doors.
He plays fetch.

I think he's a dog.
