The litter tray

Looks like we're going to lose my lovely old girl :-(

Feeling really sad today as my lovely tabby and white beautiful fluffy 17 year old cat is likely to be PTS tomorrow Sad

She was fine until Thursday, but on Friday morning she was really lethargic and wouldn't eat or drink all day, so we took her to the vets at 4pm and she's been there ever since. she's got a raging temperature of over 40 degrees, and is in pain but the vet can't figure out exactly what the problem is. If there is no improvement tomorrow and they haven't figured out what is wrong (she's having an x-ray and a scan in the morning) then I think we may have to let her go. It isn't fair for us to let her suffer, especially given her age. She's suffering and is so poorly now. I went to see her today and she just looks tired and sad, and I can't bare it.

I was only nine when we got her, and she was such a cute ball of fluff. She has outlived so many of my childhood pets, and has been so lovely and tolerant of all of them. I don't even live with her anymore as she lives with my parents and I am now married with my own family, but she's still my cat and is always so pleased to see me when I go home, even though she probably hasn't forgiven me for being the annoying 9 year old who carted her around the house like a doll when she was little!

I don't want to lose her, she's like a living piece of my childhood and my parents house wont be the same without her, she has just always been around and I will miss her. I don't even think we have any nice photos Sad

That's so sad. Let's hope the vets can do something for her. Those are quite strange symptoms. And if they can't, well at least she's had a long and good life and was loved and that will be a comfort to you in the long run.

I am with you. My old girl is ten but rickity and wobbly after an illness and we have to boil up chicken and soft food for her. She is not in pain BUT the day is close when we are going to lose her and I cannot bear the thought.

The little critters get into your heart don't they? Take loads of photos now and treasure the time you have left with her. She has had a lovely life and I don't want to post in the past tense but she will have a gentle passing. My old cat came to say goodbye with a 'kiss' on my nose as she always did and went to bed and that was it. All quiet and curled up 'asleep' in her favourite bed.

Hugs to you.

Hugs for you..they are so much more than pets, aren't they? It sounds like you two have had a long and loving time together..
My little ginger girl is at least ten years old. She is such a love, but so tiny and frail..the thought of having to let her go makes me ache..
Xxxx

Thanks everyone. No news from the vet yet, but hoping to hear soon. My poor old girl. I know in the grand scheme of things she's only a cat, but she's part of my family Sad

No such thing as 'only a cat' on this board, Doodle. Here's hoping for reasonable new for you later on this morning.

Well we got called up to the vets at 9pm last night as they didn't think she'd survive the night, so we went and said our goodbyes which was heartbreaking. BUT, this morning her temperature and red blood cell count were better and she was very much still alive! They have had to put a feeding tube in her neck as she wont eat anything, and she looks really really poorly, but I have just been to see her and she purred a bit. They have done loads of tests and think she has severe pancriatitus amd a form of hepatitus, so they are going to treat for that and see how she goes. Poor thing. They said she's very poorly so basically to expect the worst, but she defied the odds last night so maybe she can do it again?

Maybe so. It doesn't look good - as you know only too well - but here's hoping. All the best to her and you. At least she's in the best place if she's ill.

Keep us updated, Doodle.

Sorry, no idea how I posted that twice!

No, it doesn't look good, but i'm just crossing my fingers and toes that she gets better so we can have a bit longer with her. I'm not ready to lose her yet. Though I guess that's a silly thing to say, when are you ever ready to lose them?

They've said she's not in pain as she's doped up with painkillers, and aren't recommending putting her to sleep yet as they think she has a small chance, but I am battling with feeling that maybe it is unfair of us to let this drag on, but I don't really know. If she gets better then it will have been worth it, but if she doesn't then i'll feel terrible.

Maybe tomorrow will give the answer?

Yes - I'd wait till then if she's not in discomfort or pain and they think there's a chance. Things will likely be clearer then.

My old girl seems brighter today and the vet thinks she has made some progress Smile. When we went to see her, she was purring and even got up to try and jump out of her cage. They have said she is still very poorly and is by no means out of the woods, and we basically need to take each day as it comes, but it is a step in the right direction and suggests that she is responding to the treatment. Fingers crossed she carries on like this.

Sad update i'm afraid, we had to have our lovely girl put to sleep this morning. She just looked so sad and had lost her will to fight any more. My mum amd I held her while they did it, and it was very peaceful, but we are all so upset. She gave us a little purr this morning which made it really hard, but it wasn't fair on her anymore, this has dragged on for over a week now.

I feel so sad. I don't really remember not having her, she has just always been here. She was so sweet. I can't help feeling guilty about all the times I pushed her away when she wanted a cuddle at 3am, or the fact that I haven't even got a recent photo of her. I loved her Sad

She went peacefully and in love, Doodle. That won't ease the rawness right now but it will help in times to come. You did the right thing.

Poor old thing Sad. Every time I lose a pet I wonder why I have any in the first place. It is absolutely heartbreaking when they die. Why do we put ourselves through this?! I loved my animals so so much, losing them is just so horrible.

Because they bring such joy when they're with us, that's why. The pain and loss goes with that, sadly.
