My cat has hurt her paw - advice please

Hello fellow cat lovers

I wonder if anyone can offer me some advice please. I have just got home and found my poor wee cat (2y old) not wanting to weight bear on her back leg. She is OK when sitting down and seems happy to have it on the ground, but seems to be hopping when she runs. She is now grooming and has eaten her supper but does not want to put any weight on it as she moves around.

Should I take her to the vet tomorrow? This has never happened before so I am unsure how long to wait before taking her in. In addition, would this be covered by standard pet insurance (which we have) and do I need to phone them first to get authorisation or should I just pay and offset it against the excess?

Since starting to type she has moved (on 3 legs) to the garden and is washing herself. She doesn't seem distressed.

Am reminded of the Mog and the VET story - hope she doesn't bite the vet tomorrow.

Make a vet appointment, if its broken it'll only get worse and you'll end up with a bigger bill!
Your insurance should cover it, you usually don't need to talk to the insurance people before an appointment, in fact some vets will sort the insurance claim fr you. Ask, the receptionist when you call.

Thank you Mogz. I'll call tomorrow and see if she can be slotted in.

It turns out that she had a big fight with the enormous British Blue from next door. DH says she had a huge chunk of fur taken from her stomach as well as him having a go at her leg. I wonder if it's a bite? Can't see anything. We will go to the vet anyway, just to be sure.

Aww poor cat, if it was a fight then do mention that to the vet as they'll want to chuck for puncture wounds caused by biting, cats have rather a lot of bacteria in their mouths which can cause nasty infections. You also might want to mention it to the neighbour so they can check their cat.
Hopefully it's nothing though and she'll be right as rain.

definately take to the vet, if it was a cat bite, and i bet it was - the bully next door has bitten her as he retreated (get the water pistol out ), she may need some anti-biotics as it is possibly she will develop and abscess. If its just that it probably wont warrant an insurance claim (hopefully) but if it does, your vet practice should deal with it for you.

Cat a bit better today but took to vet anyway. She doesn't have an abscess but her leg and back are very bruised and her nose has a big scab on it. Antibiotics and painkillers prescribed. Am 80 quid poorer but feel happier that cat is ok.

Sounds like she had a proper scrap! Glad she's got the all clear.

By the way - if she had a fight only yesterday, she might still have had an abscess develop in a day or two. It's real difficult, even for a vet, to spot a paw or tooth puncture in a furred cat and you could have had to take her up anyway. The ABs should take care of that though.
