The litter tray

Old lady cat and litter tray

After a little bit of advice if anyone can help! Old lady cat, soon to be 20, has used the litter tray fine since we took her in, she knew how to use it straight away, amazing since she had lived outside for so many years. We have 2 litter trays around the house for her to use, our other cats don't use them.

Recently, we have noticed that she's been slightly missing the tray, she gets in it absolotuly fine, but tends to wee right on the edge of the tray, and sometimes she wees just over the edge! Any tips on how we can encourage her to move more into the middle of the tray? Any special type of litter trays for older cats? I've seen some high sided trays, but i worry she wouldn't be able to get in them, and covered litter trays aren't an option, as i've heard this can cause stress in some cats, causing even more toilet problems!

My friend has a similar problem with her old lady. I'm not sure if she's tried different trays, but I know she buys some puppy training mats from somewhere cheap like Poundland/Wilkinson, which help soak up any accidents.

Ah, great idea Tigerblue will look at getting some puppy training mats.

If getting in and out becomes a problem you could try just a flat ex-food tray, I used to use one for kittens, it is a little bit messy so if you have a tiled area too that would help, if not the puppy training pads is a great idea.
