Getting kitten to use litter tray

No, not getting him onto MN

8wk old kitten arrived yesterday, very cute and black and fluffy, DC very happy

His mum's owner said he was using the litter tray but he hasn't used it since he arrived here - over 24hrs :(
I can't smell anything dreadful but we're about to pull the footstool out which he's been hiding behind, and I wondered if anyone had any top tips for getting him to go? we've placed him in there several times but its still clean

They're naturally extremely clean so if he was using it, it shouldn't be a problem at 8 weeks. He might keep his legs crossed for ages, though. Has he eaten or drunk since he arrived?

(Does his Mum's owner live close by? If so, you could ask for a tablespoon of the litter from the tray he's been using - just to sprinkle on top and remind him of his duty. )

PS - it might all be too busy and loud for him at the moment given it's the biggest change in his life. Maybe give him some space and a little private time? And make sure his tray is in a fairly quiet and out of the way place.

We went away overnight a Couple of weeks ago, we dusted off the
Litter tray (not used it since she was 6 months old - now 18 months old) came back 24 hours later and she was delighted to see us, it used the tray and was In no rush to get out the house. They can hold fr ages if they want to. I'd keep picking him up and putting him in it so he remembers where it is.

R you using a different type of litter ?

I found where he'd had an accident and very conveniently it was on a magazine so I could put a couple of wet pages into his tray and he's taken the hint since then :)
Will give him a couple more days before I put the door on the tray (covered one) and when he's got the hang of that, hopefully the toddler will leave the litter alone!

Oh well done Yorkycat. (And I think one little accident can be excused in those circumstances and when you're nowt but a baby, eh?)
