Getting peed off with the cat peeing on my carpet!

Hi,

Would like some advice as getting very peed off with one of our cats as it keeps peeing on the carpet.

The cat is nearly 11 years old. It is a recent habit within last couple of weeks.

Our cats are indoor cats.

Their toilet is situated inside the under-stairs cupboard, which they access through a cat-flap (we did this so they could have privacy and to stop small people from playing with the cat litter). She has for at least 2 weeks that we know of started weeing on the carpet just outside the door of cat-flap. She doesn't seem to be doing it anywhere else but here.

The carpet stinks, and it is now going through the underlay. Have tried putting bio of soda on it, and covering carpet with a rug, but still she pees there.

Can anyone advises on what we should do, as it's driving us crackers.

I don't think she likes her toileting arrangements any more is my best guess. How many cats do you have and how many trays? There should be more than one tray if you have more than one cat in my view.

I'd try putting at least one more tray outside the cupboard in the main house and see how that goes.

We have 2 cats, and they share the one litter tray which we change regularly. It's not been an issue previously.

She still going into the toilet in the cupboard to do poos just not wees, so not entirely convinced it's because she's unhappy with location of tray?

Well there may be some tension between your cats - you'll be best palced to judge that from their behaviour - but I really don't think that one tray is enough, I'm afraid. Some cats, eg cozieseniorboy here, will sometimes not pee in a tray if it has a poo in it (the smell I guess.) So it may be that she pees outside when she's done a poo inside. The two events can often happen with minutes of each other so you might not have time to notice and clean up.

There's clearly some tension there or she wouldn't be using the carpet so I'd try and additional tray and see how that works for a few days. (It may not be used that often but in any case, it's handy to have a spare tray or two while you're cleaning and washing them so not a 'dead purchase'.)

You'll need to clean the carpet thoroughly of course before you put any new tray in place; to get her mind off it . Some odour neutraliser would be good.

PS - put a dessert spoon or so of clean litter from the old used tray into the new one so that it smells homely. (It may be clean but cats' noses will be able to tell.)

Ah they have a habit of doing that! Have one almost sat on my head behind me on the sofa at the mo!
