The litter tray

Cat's been in a MASSIVE fight.

Our cat's attacked the neighbourhood tom, usually I just ignore fighting as most fights are just gobbing off at each other but he launched himself at the tom, when I screamed at them to stop (bet the neighbours love me) they both stopped, looked at me and hissed at me!.

I had to throw water over them to get them to stop and even then they carried on for a bit until I was able to grab ours by the scruff, By then he had noticed I was there and was deciding wether to attack me or the tom.

He's being quiet now and I think the pain has kicked in. He has a cut right over the top of his eye and it's bleeding a little bit.

I have a massive scratch off his back legs on my forearm covered in sudocrem and mepore plasters.

It was awful. I have to vent on here because DH will say "you should let them get on with it" but he's a bengal and they will quite literally fight to the death and I dont want him losing an eye or something. Not quite sure what something is but I dont want it happening to PFB (precious first bengal).

We should have had another chinchilla again, our chinchilla males knew when to stop.

So I have one very sorry for himself bengal. A picnic that will now have to go back in the freezer and I have to drive best part of 10 miles with an animal that doesnt do car journeys. Or cat carriers. And a sleeping DH who will say I'm over reacting by taking him to the vets for a cut.

Thank you for reading. I feel like having a little cry now

Oh Fluffy, that's horrible. What a way to start your Sunday. Sad And it would be a Sunday wouldn't it so the vet costs £££££££s.

Don't cry. It will all be sorted. Good luck at the Vets. He will probably get an antibiotic jab and a course of tablets.

cat fights are so dramatic though, you must have been terrified! have a cry, it's shock as well as sadness for what you've just witnessed.

i think you should have your cut looked at tbh, are your tetanus jabs up to date?

and fwiw i don't think you're over reacting by wanting to take him to the vets, that's what a responsible owner would do, not sure about him always fighting with the neighbours cat though, is there anything you can do about that?

The Burmese terrorist from down the road lynched Sparkling Cat once. It cost £96 at the vets having the bite treated. I was distraught. Why can't they just get along?

I know I sound a bit heartless, I dont mind missing a day out really if it means he isnt left blind in one eye (looking on the bright side)

I do everything to look after him and he has to launch himself at a tom. I fussed the other cat once and I think he is a full tom too.

Theres chunks of fur all over the back garden and he's definitely quiter than usual.

The blood pooling a bit in the corner of the eye now. He complained a bit when I picked his paw up so maybe he has a pad injury too. Bengal fur is so dense you cant see injurys so I've been rubbing my fingers under his fur but no bloods coming away.

I've never seen them biting each others necks before, it was a no holds barred fight. Still a bit shakey and teary. DH still asleep.

It is scary. The noises they make too. Sad

Once you are back from the vets and you have settled him in the house for a long sleep could you go out then?

My DH would probably be the same as yours about it all TBH.

Yes, we can still go out I just wanted to go a place thats about 40miles away and dh hates car journeys (he's in the motor trade too, oh the irony) and we usually go about 11, once dh has done something non-essential like a last minute decision to wash the car!.

I'm not selfish I know he has to get it checked out, the pets at home place isnt too pricey and I have some clavaseptin antibiotics left over, It's a full 21 tablet course so if its what the vet wants to prescribe I'll just say I already have some. It's probably not the right antibiotc for wounds anyway I kept them as a vet prescribed them for his tummy and I knew all he needed was the stingy injection in his neck. They are in date.

I only got up early so he could have a run round while I ironed or he'd have been in the house until we got home tonight.

He hates black and white cats for some reason, he's ok with gingers and black cats but always fights black and white cats.

So I have a racist cat.

Sparkling Cat doesnt like other female cats. She loves male cats-and frequently tries to attract the attention of the tabby male over the road and roll on her back for him. Hmm

Cats are weird. It must all make sense to them I suppose. Confused

In a way it's good you saw what happened. If he had come in looking like it you may have wondered what on earth had happened to him.

Do you really need to take him to vet today? I know I'm ignorant, and probably not visualising the cut properly, but I'm wondering what difference it would really make to take him in as emergency case today vs urgent case tomorrow.

It might prevent infection, It's a cut right on the eyelid. On us it would be where our eyelashes are.

He's also acting strangely (for a bengal) as he isnt shouting his head off. He's had a bit of a pasting.

Cats are odd. The male cat fighting wail is horredus.
There is turfwar going on here, generally accompanied by much wailing at dusk - not sure between who, but our cat is always indoors.
Interestingly there is a heavily pregnant cat who my (female)cat will tollerate hanging out in our garden, they made lots of silly noises at each other, but now just ignore each other.

Keep a close eye on him, fluffy. Besides the psychological shock of a big fight (which can affect them for days), there's always the possibility of eg a puncture wound which you can't see for fur and which might get infected/abscess etc. Cat's claws and mouths are so dirty.

I think you're quite right to take him to the vet. Heck of a start to Sunday for you.

Sad

Oh no! Your poor cat.

Is your cat a full tom? If you get him neutered he will (hopefully!) be less keen to take on the neighbourhood tom.
You could suggest this to the owner of the cat he was fighting with, too.

Report
marriedinwhite · 19/08/2012 10:55

It sounds as though he is in shock and may be injured elsewhere. Cat's do not necessarily whimper appear too poorly in shock but their behaviour becomes not usual for them. Taking into account the injury close to the eye and the pooling blood in the corner of the eye with the cat's behaviour I think you need to get this cat to the vet immediately.

Still waiting for the vet, the 11.10 appts still waiting too.

Cat currently growling at a small terrier.

He is neutered, he's feisty though and doesn't like other cats if they are black and White.

Fine with black and Ginger ones though.

Sparkling Cat is registered at Companion care the Vets at Pets at Home. I haven't had to try them at the weekend yet.

I have been really impressed by them though.

When I woke dh to say im taking the cat to the vet he was all oh he'll be ok then he saw him and asked if he'd been run over.

Didn't notice until then that he's limping on his back legs too.

Sounds like he may have a bite on his lower back, fluffy. I'm sure the vet will check him over.

Report
Fluffycloudland77 · 19/08/2012 13:39

Well, I'm back.

No bites just the scratch to the eyelid and luckily he closed his eyes when the other cat scratched him.

She cant find any bites on him but if there are he will be showing symptoms over the next few days I suppose.

DH has been out and cleared up all the fur, he said the ground was littered in broken claws.

I dont know if the other cat is injured, I have to confess I grabbed ours and just got him away, he's on the bed now looking reproachfully at me.

Cos it's all my fault of course.

£60 lighter now but at least his eye is ok.

Good news fluffy. As I mentioned, keep an eye open for puncture wounds - particularly if there are broken claws everywhere. They might be fine but the first you might know about it is a swelling from infection.

Sounds like fluffycat is going to be grounded for a day or two?

Oh yes he's grounded in the mornings now for certain, they had a similar run in the other week but it was over the road in some back gardens so I couldnt see him but I could hear it.

It lasted 45 minutes. The cat came in with no marks on him. Bet our neighbours love us. Asbo kitty.

A bengal and a full tom living within a mile of each other. That's a no-brainer. Have they made any mention of having theirs neutered?

Report
Fluffycloudland77 · 19/08/2012 14:38

We dont know the owner, it's a small village so DH could probably find out. Someone was here the other week taking photos of him saying he looked like her lost bengal, she came from two villages away so word obviously spreads like wildfire around here.

He was friends with a black farm cat where we used to live, I never got close enough to see if he was neutered but I cant imagine farm cats being neutered somehow.

I dont know for definite he is a full tom, I was fussing him recently though and I'm sure I got the impression he was full tom, I was sure at the time he had furry bits. I never gave it much thought tbh. I just assumed they would have scraps and sort out a hierarchy.

My naievity knows no bounds.
