This morning she was coughing and has also had a sloppy bowel accident outside. She wasn't interested in breakfast even though I didn't come down until after 9 and she wasn't about when DH left at 7. He normally feeds her before he goes. I had to put the plate under her nose to get her to come and ear.

Her back legs are a bit wobbly and I will take her for a jab on Monday to hopefully get some relief. She didn't wee over night so that is postiive but when I was comforting her when she was coughing it really hit me that she is very old and isn't my baby anymore sad.

She has lasted for DD's birthday but I am not sure she will make her own sad.

I have just put a towel on the sofa for her to sit on, just in case, but she wasn't impressed and has jumped down on to the floor.

My cat is getting to the end of her life and I am not sure I will ever get over it blush.

She means the world to me, is the only thing in the world that is 100% mine, and I will miss her so much.

Sorry to hear that FAB, I was same with my lovely old cat a couple of years ago.

Its hard but am sure she's had a great life with you and as she gets more ill you will need to eventually decide to prevent any suffering and let her go as painlessly as you can sad

I've got another cat & she reminds me so much of my old cat, its like she's been re-incarnated, she was a great cat to live-up to smile

So sorry sad

issey6cats Fri 03-Aug-12 13:23:08

so sorry big hugs to you and fabcat x

JustFabulous Fri 03-Aug-12 13:44:32

She has settled down next to me and is just dozing off. She is a bit smelly which is not like her at all.

TBH I don't know what I am looking for for when it is time but I know she will have to be PTS rather than take herself off to die.

MrsGrumps Fri 03-Aug-12 13:59:34

Sounds to me like if it is not now, it will only be a matter of days.

All I can offer is that if you were FABCat, would you rather go now peacefully and easily or continue like you are?

((Hugs))

Fabcat sounds like my old darling who died @ 21 yrs of age. She was my first cat as an adult + the last link to my single days. I still miss her but now have 2 sisters who are much loved by the family.

You will know when the time is right, + it will be the time last, loving thing you do to let her go peacefully.

Big hugs to you + fabcat.

Hi, hand holding, it's a difficult place to be in. When I was deciding wether to treat the lump or not the vet nurses said to me "as long as her quality of life outweighs the illness".

One morning she ate a mouthful of food and didn't want to go out, that to me was her quality gone as she loved food and walks so I knew it was time.

sad You'll know. Sorry if that's no help.

oopsCENSOREDagain Fri 03-Aug-12 14:08:08

Oh I'm so sorry FAB, you have had such a long time with her and she's had so many problems but still fighting on.

She sounds like she's not in any discomfort, at least.

Make the most of the time you have left. sad

JustFabulous Fri 03-Aug-12 14:09:34

It is so hard for me as she has had illnesses for ages but has coped brilliantly and has been fine on medication.

I just don't believe she only has days sad. I am relieved the vet will see her on Monday so not too long before she has a check over.

She has eaten, has had a nap, had another nap, a little walk and is now sleeping.

I have never had to have a pet PTS before. My hamsters all died in their sleep and one broke his leg so there was no hope for him. It is so different with FABCat.

I feel sick

and rather stupid, she is just an animal afterall

JustFabulous Fri 03-Aug-12 14:11:39

Sounds daft but it seems that as long as she is eating the vet isn't worried about her, however it seems the only time she doesn't eat is if we have bought her a flavour she doesn't like. My human children still eat when ill too, so much so the GP missed a serious infection with DS1 because he was still having his milk.

oopsCENSOREDagain Fri 03-Aug-12 14:13:50

She's not just an animal. She's a part of your life, a huge part.

JustFabulous Fri 03-Aug-12 14:23:34

No one else has been in my life as long as her, except for one school friend. She is sleeping now and looks so cute.

We came home one day and found our cat dead on the road. He had been run over!
Two years later I'm still finding my eyes well with tears as I type this.
We adopted him the week after we moved in together over 16 years ago when he was 5 mths old. He was 14 when he died!
He lived with us through the birth of 5 children and a m/c, 2 house moves and numerous other milestones in all of our lives!
7 weeks ago we finally felt ready to adopt another cat!

They're not just animals, they're part of the family! sad

JustFabulous Fri 03-Aug-12 14:40:34

Oh, that is so sad and I am terrified that the same will happen wit FABCat as one neighbour drives like a twat.

She has lived with me in 5 different houses and a flat, has a really lovely life and has put up with me crying tears all on her fur when I have been upset. I will do anything for her and I will not let her suffer.

TBH I don't think it is time yet but it is slowly sinking in that it will be at some point.

BlueBirdsNest Fri 03-Aug-12 15:27:01

would it not be more natural just to let her fade away in her own time rahrer than getting her PTS?

She sounds like your best friend....I'm sad for you and fabcat

JustFabulous Fri 03-Aug-12 15:30:04

If she went in her sleep then that would be best for her as she wouldn't know, would she? But I am terrified of finding her dead. I couldn't cope with seeing my hamster dead, it scared me blush.

I don't know that she would just go in her sleep, she has cancer as well as some other illnesses.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain Fri 03-Aug-12 15:35:59

Which ever you choose fab you will be doing it with the best intention. I don't thing there is a wrong or a right answer to when and whether to PTS all I know is that as pet owners we have a duty to do our best by them so they don't suffer unnecessarily. Only you can make that call.
Thinking of you, it's the hardest decision that a pet owner has to make and you are clearly making it out of love for fabcat.

BlueBirdsNest Fri 03-Aug-12 15:36:40

don't be scared about finding her dead , everyone's life ends at some point and you will there and she will know it and thank you for it

JustFabulous Fri 03-Aug-12 15:47:47

I haven't seen or heard her play with her toy today so I will be keeping an eye on that.

I think she needs to still eat, drink and play to be having quality of life.

Fluffycloudland77 Fri 03-Aug-12 15:48:06

I'm so sorry, it's obvious how much you love her.

We only pts our cats when they are in pain. Until then we let them carry on but we knew everytime when it was the right time.

You just cant imagine life without them.

Mrsjay Fri 03-Aug-12 15:50:53

sorry to hear that fab I am sure your cat had an amazing life with you , it is just heartbreaking when you have to make the decisions,I was grateful to the lovely mumsnetters who helped me a few months ago when i had to have jaycat put to sleep, it is sad but you are doing the kindest thing. jaycat had a cough and was just licking her food at the end we had to she was suffering,

JustFabulous Fri 03-Aug-12 15:52:23

The vet keeps telling me I will know.

Mrsjay Fri 03-Aug-12 15:52:32

fab honestly you will know when it is time to take her,

changeforthebetter Fri 03-Aug-12 15:57:02

Sorry, I hadn't realised you were the kind poster who commented on my thread.

Good luck with your decision. I knew last night - you will know what to do.

Massive (unMN) hug sad
