Bugs on cats ears

I've just seen a number of black bugs on both ears of one of my cats.
They are not ticks nor fleas, as I know what both of these look like. They are firmly attached to him, don't seem to cause pain, but he doesn't like me looking for too long. There are between 4 and 5 of them. They are on the back (outside of the ear) not on the inner ear, and the inside of the ear looks clean.
They are treated with Advocate and Pro(something) for fleas and worms.
Anyone any idea what these bugs may be?

Ear mites ?

Usually there will be loads of them inside the ears and nose . .

If you've never treated mites before , then you will need to take your cat to the vet and get them to show you what to do.

Not had ear mites before. But from googling - not taking them to an out of hours vet, I'll take them in the morning if not worked it out before then - these are too big.

They are the size of big fleas, but when I get one off it just lays in the hand on its side and doesn't jump or anything.
