We have just got an approx month old springer. He is very excited (as you would expect) and has been chasing the cats at every opportunity. Not in an aggressive way but just in an 'oh something to run after' way. We've tried 'introducing the cats' while he has been on a lead but then he see them in the garden or they happen to walk through the room and he is after them.

Any tips on how to stop it - if the cats come home I can't get them to come even when called and rattling a box of treats at the minute. They both normally come running.

what i did when my dog was a pup was everytime the cat walked into the room or anywhere near him was to make him sit down.

worked so well that whenever my cats in a bad mood and swipes the dog he just sits their and takes it,shame i cant train the cat not to be so mean to him.

A tall scratching post might be useful for your cats - maybe even two. Give them a safe high up spot in which to taunt him from. Shame your cats don't seem to be fighting back - usually cats do and will quickly train a dog to stop it.

I would also suggest dog free parts of your house too so your cats can get some peace. Maybe a bedroom or office where you cats still feel like it is theirs.

The dog is not allowed upstairs. and we've put a cat flap on one of the internal doors downstairs so that they can get through but the dog can't.

One of the cats is getting braver and has been hissing at the dog from the safety of the stairs and is now downstairs sitting on the window sill behind the curtain. the dog is completly ignoring the fact that the cat is there. He's not aggressive with them but chases if they leg it. If one of the gave him a good wack I think he would just leave them alone.

Still it's only the 2nd day today.

Just realised my original post said month out. I missed 9 out. He's about 9 months so quite a big, albeit gangly, dog.
