After all my threads we have decided to rehome a pup, tomorrow we are going to look at a litter of black lab pups in hope to reserve a boy (they are not ready until next week), the dd's are arguing over names, any ideas what we can call him?

Also any lab advice and what to look for when picking a pup? we are hoping that we can train him to be an assistant dog for dd2 when we are out and about, she has Autism, so we need to pick a good pup.

Oreo? Considering labs love of food, might not be a bad name

NB how is your DD's speech? Any sounds she struggles with, that you might need to avoid in 'her' dog?

Tragedies Mon 07-Jan-13 16:05:11

Ebon (from Ebony)
Musta (Finnish for black)
Mavro (Greek for black)
Pango (Maori for back)

I like Mavro best!

Marne Mon 07-Jan-13 16:05:19

Dd1 is loving Orio as some of the pups have a tiny white strip on their chests smile.

Aren't all black labs called Sam or Ben?

Having said that, I am usually a fan of meeting and getting to know an animal before I try to name it. We'd had our cat Spike for 4 weeks before he got his name.

Have some possibilities lined up, but also see what your chosen pup is like. No point setting -your- the kids' hearts on a name and then it not fitting your pet's character. I know someone who had a very quiet and shy Cocker Spaniel called Bouncer. Never met a less bouncy dog in my life!!!

Floralnomad Mon 07-Jan-13 16:07:42

Not to put a dampener on things but where are you getting the puppy from ? Most good breeders would not have pups available at 7 weeks old ,indeed many would have had reservations prior to the pups being born . Wouldn't want you to end up with a dodgy dog . Also Dodge is quite a nice name !

weegiemum Mon 07-Jan-13 16:07:54

Dubh - pronounced "duoo" - Gaelic for black!

cathpip Mon 07-Jan-13 16:09:05

All of my old labs names! as for picking one tell the breeder what you are looking for and get him to help. smile

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Mon 07-Jan-13 16:09:45

I know not of what I speak grin but is there anyone who trains dogs to be assistance dogs that you could call?

Have you called any of the many Labrador Clubs or rescues? There seem to be a ton of them out there! (to help you know what to look for)

As for names - Jack?

HoneyDragon Mon 07-Jan-13 16:43:12

confused where does it say the pups are seven weeks. Op says rehome so I assumed rescue?

Stratters is an excellent name for a puppy

Hi OP, what sort of training are you going to be doing?

fuzzpig Mon 07-Jan-13 16:47:46

Dr Pepper grin

Dyson is a genius name for a lab! Henry, too, by the same reasoning... grin

The pup is 7 weeks old (8 weeks old this weekend), we have looked at one place that runs courses to train family pets as assistant dogs for children/adults with Autism, i am looking for puppy classes too (but struggling to find anything near by) sad. We plan to socialise him as soon as we can (10 days afte his jabs), we will be taking him to the 'puppy party' at our vets and hopfully then can tell us about local puppy clases.

Our Staffie is great with both the dd's but she's not as good when we are out and doesn't travel well, so i will need to get this pup used to going in the car straight away and walking well on the lead (eventualy next to dd2).

As for names, at the moment 'Oreo' is top of the list with the dd's, though i like dyson smile.

I must be stronger with training as we slipped up a little with out other dog and she has now taken over the sofa, idealy i would like them to sleep on a dog bed and not on the furniture (so i must try not to be soft).

Marne Mon 07-Jan-13 18:06:06

And they are rescue pups (so are in a home with foster parents) so kind of re-homing. They were seperated from mum today as she went to her forever home.

LadyTurmoil Mon 07-Jan-13 18:21:50

Oreo is a great idea, also Scully, Ben, Churchill, Winston, Bourbon, Jack (Daniels), Treacle is lovely too. How about Orson (Welles), Bradley, Cooper (Coop), Bryn, Humphrey...

Shadow ?

prettysunset Mon 07-Jan-13 19:21:44

Bracken. We've just today said goodbye to our 13 yr old Golden Girl Bailey...Bracken is what we would name a male black lab. Xx

redrubyshoes Mon 07-Jan-13 19:26:41

Mangetout - black labs - they really do eat everything!

I remember that quarter of acid drops that went 'missing' and reappeared rather rapidly hmm

or Wilbur?

Marne Mon 07-Jan-13 19:32:17

So sorry for your loss Andyflo sad

Loving all the names, so hard to decide, will see what suits him. Just been looking at a photo of them, there is deffently a bit of another breed in there (with the white stripe on their chests) but not sure what, the foster carer seems to think they will be smaller than most labs. Mum was a lab but maybe with a touch of something else as she is quite small, will be exciting to see what he grows into.

Aquelven Mon 07-Jan-13 19:47:03

Whitby (jet)

Happiestinwellybobs Mon 07-Jan-13 19:51:53

My black lab is Max, but our short list was Dexter, Rufus, Humphrey & Dave! We also know a black lab called Dyson - very apt smile

prettysunset Mon 07-Jan-13 19:58:16

Aquelven-love Whitby! Dearly departed dog and DH of NE origin. Xx

Thank you for all the ideas, we now have a list which still has around 20 names on it smile, its going to be hard to decide. I'm going to see the pups at lunch time today so will see what name suits him.

cq Tue 08-Jan-13 10:57:05

Can I add a late vote for Rumpus? Lovely name for a cuddly boisterous bundle of love!

kiwigirl42 Tue 08-Jan-13 11:08:44

We've got a choc lab called Rosie but I did look at her yesterday and wish I'd called her Pickles. She is always in one!

kiwigirl42 Tue 08-Jan-13 11:09:31

Beamish is our other black animal name

stleger Tue 08-Jan-13 11:26:09

I knew a lovely Bramble; I know an autism assistance dog called Nifty, who is a black lab. He is great, I hope yours will be too!

multipoodles Tue 08-Jan-13 12:36:41

We have a black standard poodle called Inca and Ben Fogle used to have a black lab with the same name. When she arrived she was as black as ink and thought Inka would be a nice name but spelt it Inca (as in teh Incas) smile

Marne Tue 08-Jan-13 17:57:59

We have a short list (which is rather long), heres a few of the best ones:

Apollo (my favorite at the moment)
Oreo (both dd's like this)
Zack (dh's choice)
Black Jack
Badger (dd1's idea)

Marne Tue 08-Jan-13 18:00:01

oh, and i picked a pup today, he's a chuncky little boy, has a tiny spot of white on his back paw and a tiny bit of white on his chest. We think he may have a touch of collie in him (but not sure as we dont know what breed dad was), he's deffently mosty lab though, will add a pic to my profile.

Happiestinwellybobs Tue 08-Jan-13 18:50:03

Congratulations!! I remember the first day we met Max, our black lab - he was 5 days old! I should have realised after seeing his dad (Bombay Bad boy aka Angus) that he was going to be huge. I'm sure he is part donkey!! But he has bought such joy to our family. Love all the names on your short list smile

WifeofPie Tue 08-Jan-13 19:27:47

Oh! He is darling! <squeals> Enjoy him smile.

So cute! grin

I would call him Parsley!

redrubyshoes Tue 08-Jan-13 21:29:08

He looks like a Monty to me just gorgeous.

littlewhitebag Tue 08-Jan-13 22:26:19

I met a black lab when out the other day - he was called Bomber. It was so apt!

ToomuchWaternotWine Tue 08-Jan-13 22:27:30

What a cutie! He's lovely <sigh, puppy love> hope the staffy takes to him and vice versa.

Recent boy dog names I have heard:

I love Oreo, Whitby and Dyson from the lists here. Let us know, won't you?

ToomuchWaternotWine Tue 08-Jan-13 22:29:03

Ooh sorry forgot to say I also love the suggestion of Sirius (black) - do your girls like Harry Potter?

42karen Tue 08-Jan-13 22:33:46

I know a "diesel."

Sebastian - Seb?

Happiestinwellybobs Wed 09-Jan-13 09:49:22

Oh he's gorgeous !!!

Marne Wed 09-Jan-13 16:54:09

My dd's do like Harry Potter (so love the name Sirius).

I have registered him at the vets today and at the moment he is called 'Apollo' (which we kind of agreed on last night), this might change though. grin.

Imabadmum Thu 10-Jan-13 23:53:46

How about Dillan/Dylan?

I had a black lab called Dillan, and he passed away this morning. I had him since he was a pup, and he turned 10 on 28 Dec.

He was the most loyal, loving, trainable and gentle creature I have ever known.

You have made a great choice in a black lab, but do be sure you take him to puppy training classes as they can get boisterous and then they are a handful.

I hope you have as much fun and love from your new pup, as I did from Dill. xx

higgle Fri 11-Jan-13 09:43:26

Two of the nicest dogs I've ever met were black labs - Buster and Oscar

Marne Fri 11-Jan-13 10:43:37

Imabadmum- so sorry for your loss sad i hope in time you manage to let another lab into your life. We have been looking for puppy training classes, i forgot to ask the vet the other day (was on my list of things to ask), we deffently want to start training ASAP and are looking at 'clicker training'. Puppy classes may be delayed as we are having problens with vaccinations (vet saying 'pup has had its first injection too early so may have to have 3 lots before safe to go out'). I just cant wait to get him home smile the dd's have decided to call him 'Apollo' but it was a close choice and he was almost 'Oreo'.

maxybrown Fri 11-Jan-13 16:55:55

our black lab was Casper

Lafaminute Fri 11-Jan-13 16:59:13

FWIW at this stage: Bear

Ludo24 Sat 12-Jan-13 11:14:55

OHHH so exciting....
Our black lab is Ludo and is a wonderful doggie. There are some letters that dogs find hard to distinguish so you should avoid names starting with them (sorry - can't remember what they are- think 'K' might have been one)

Other names on the list were:

I want another puppy! Enjoy it and make sure you work really hard also making sure the children treat it well. Sure they will but sometimes if they haven't had a pet they need to be taught.

Marne Sat 12-Jan-13 11:43:48

Thanks Ludo, our dd's are realy good with our other dog (dd2 has accidently sat on her a few times but other than that she is very gentle), just hope the puppy doesn't nip dd1 too much as she's a bit of a wimp, she used to get upset when our other dog used to nip her toes when she was a pup. I have stocked up on doggy toys for it to chew (spent a fortune in pets at home) so he's going to be very spoilt and so will our other dog as they will have to share.

I think its going to be madness on monday when i introduce the pup to our other dog, she's goping to want to play and lick it too death.

Marne Mon 14-Jan-13 12:58:41

Apollo is home grin after a long drive home, poor pup was very sick sad. He's had fin chasing my other dog around, she's not sure what to make of the little pup, she's not sure about his sharp teeth. Pup is now asleep and my other dog is curled up next to we (worried i have traded her in for a newer model).

WifeofPie Mon 14-Jan-13 19:19:23

Apollo! I love it! Have fun smile.
