And what breed/s is/are it/they?

I have a greyhound, and he has a housecoat, a lightweight mac, and a fleece lined waterproof coat. He also has a woolly snood for when it's really cold!

TheGOLDCunnyFunt Thu 27-Sep-12 13:53:44

Oh and he has 3 bandanas. But they don't serve a purpose other than make him look cool grin

HouseLikeAZoo Thu 27-Sep-12 13:58:16

I have a greyhound too - he is very old and feels the cold. At the last count he has a fleecy housecoat, a warm waterproof coat, a lightweight mac and a knitted jumper to keep his tummy warm. He is considerably better dressed than me grin

Floralnomad Thu 27-Sep-12 14:01:34

Mine has a jumper( no sleeves) , a fleece coat, a waterproof coat and a scarf that he wears when it's really cold. He doesn't need indoor clothes .

jkklpu Thu 27-Sep-12 14:04:43

Ok, so greyhounds don't have long hair, but they are waterproof? Coats for indoors? AIBU to find this a slightly odd thread?

TheGOLDCunnyFunt Thu 27-Sep-12 14:26:19

jk greyhounds have very thin fur and skin with virtually no body fat, so they get cold very easily, getting drenched in the rain doesn't help. And our house is early 1900's so no wall insulation and it gets very cold at night (dropped to 9 degrees last winter in our bedroom shock ) but we can't afford to have the heating on all night.

When we adopted him he came with his fleece waterproof grin

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman Thu 27-Sep-12 14:29:09

None, but he's a big fat Lab.

jkklpu Thu 27-Sep-12 14:31:10

and the bandanas? hmm

monsterchild Thu 27-Sep-12 14:32:20

None? She's a Blue Heeler.

babesdontlie Thu 27-Sep-12 14:32:24

my boxers have bandanas smile

None. A big shaggy Labradoodle that doesn't need any but a shave in summer and a Staffy that refuses to leave the comfort of a centrally heated house.

TheGOLDCunnyFunt Thu 27-Sep-12 14:32:52

As I said above, they just make him look cool grin

I don't dress him up just for the hell of it (apart from his bandanas), he has clothes to keep him warm and dry. That's the only reason!

Piffle Thu 27-Sep-12 14:33:38

hurtta winter coats and a couple of Outhwaite jackets for cold days only

CakeBump Thu 27-Sep-12 14:33:52

My cocker has a blue fleece, a raincoat....

...and a multicoloured Arran sweater with matching legwarmers that he got for Xmas one year grin

Floralnomad Thu 27-Sep-12 14:35:31

Jk mine has a fluorescent bandana so it's a safety thing not a fashion statement

Kormachameleon Thu 27-Sep-12 14:42:47

Aaaw mine have rain coats and a jumper each - a polo neck because I think these are cute grin

Am also thinking of purchasing boots for Christmas for them

Housewifefromheaven Thu 27-Sep-12 14:50:26

My dog is a pug. Apparently they love dressing up! Mine doesn't. I did try with a jumper but she just stood very still looking petrified so I gave up grin

Housewifefromheaven Thu 27-Sep-12 14:50:59

I do rather like lo

nameuschangeus Thu 27-Sep-12 14:53:34

Mine has a lovely black furry coat made of genuine Labrador skin and a smelly extremely fetching red collar grin

Housewifefromheaven Thu 27-Sep-12 14:54:10

Oops! I do rather like though looking at pictures of dressed up dogs. There's a site where people take pics of their dogs dressed as bees!! Bee dog I think.

Min's a whippy-cross but she is fairly furry, with an undercoat. But still feels the cold as she is delicate and thin (the backdoor is open at this moment so she is wandering around looking very cold).

She has two warm coats, a raincoat and several rather snazzy bandanas. And I have a pattern that my mum gave me, for a snuggly sweater.

I used to have a very tiny rescue yorkie, who had, amongst other things, a lovely Santa suit to wear on Christmas Day. Bought, needless to say, by my then teenage DD ('He looks so cute, Mum!')

CakeBump Thu 27-Sep-12 14:59:45

I tried to put an elf's hat on mine once and he nearly took my arm off...

LottieJenkins Thu 27-Sep-12 15:00:40

Bumbledog has an army commando dog coat, a raincoat and a Chelsea football shirt!!! grin

Bubblemoon Thu 27-Sep-12 15:18:31

When we adopted our dog she came with a bag of stuff which included a full santa outfit. She's never worn it as she'd obvious eaten too much turkey and sprouts and I couldn't get it over her fat arse.

ShabbyChit Thu 27-Sep-12 15:50:55

i have a mini Schnauzer and as of yet he has nothing!
After pay day I am going to get him one of these for when the weather gets really cold. A friend with the same breed has one and they seem great!
Before we got him I was quite against dressing animals (and babies for that matter!) in silly outfits, but I have found my self looking online for a doggy santa outfit or similar! blush

Oh dear. We are a four greyhound household and I also run a business making greyhound coats and bandanas, so the answer is virtually limitless. In practice, each hound has a (bespoke) fleece housecoat for chilly nights, a light cotton walking out coat for spring/autumn dry days and a selection of light and heavy weight rain coats for wet days. They also have access to a range of bandanas and snoods/scarves, plus I've made a couple of fancy dress costumes for previous dog shows with DNs. I'm currently working on a Christmas coat for the business and inevitably at least one of ours will end up with one (not least because they'll be modelling in the photoshoot). DH refuses to countenance reindeer antlers grin but I'm working on him. And of course, there's collar porn. A delightful selection of gorgeous martingale collars with matching velvet covered leashes.....

D0oinMeCleanin Thu 27-Sep-12 16:55:36

Christmas coat?

What size would these be in? I think a nice Whiggy sized Christmas coat just might sell well, don't you? grin

D0oinMeCleanin Thu 27-Sep-12 17:07:57

I The children want to buy Whippy this for Christmas. DH says no sad

TheGOLDCunnyFunt Thu 27-Sep-12 17:45:56

You want to buy Whippy Next? shock grin

TheGOLDCunnyFunt Thu 27-Sep-12 17:47:16

One of my dogs bandanas and his housecoat are from scuttles business smile

SarahStratton Thu 27-Sep-12 18:34:24

LittleDog has loads grin

He has cotton or flannel pyjamas for when it's cold at night- he sleeps in bed with me but still needs them. He also has some fleecy ones for when it's really cold.

He has some animal onesies - bumblebee, ladybird, frog (on my profile), cow, pig, lamb, bear, rabbit, and giraffe. He also has a very fetching bright pink velour 70's style track suit.

Mostly he wears onesies from an eBay seller 'hellokittycomeon', who sells gorgeous ones that look like dungerees with a top.

He's also got a few coats, including a flying jacket which looks great with his Doggles, and Father Christmas and an elf suit for Christmas Eve/Day.

It's not as bad as it sounds, he's half Yorkie, half Chinese Crested, we think. Nobody really knows, but he's rather deficient in fur so it would make sense. Being very small and half naked means he finds it v hard to keep warm, so I get to indulge in dressing him.

toboldlygo Thu 27-Sep-12 20:39:01

Mine have an Equafleece jumper each, in serviceable black, for drying them off after racing. Couldn't recommend them more, the fabric wicks away the wet and they are quickly dry and warm underneath.

Otheregos Thu 27-Sep-12 21:51:02

Personally I hate to see dogs in clothes I just don't get it, a fleecy coat perhaps but not t shirts or Santa outfits

SarahStratton Thu 27-Sep-12 22:02:11

Thin skinned/inadequately furred dogs, particularly small ones, find it difficult to keep warm. That's why LittleDog wears clothes.

TheGOLDCunnyFunt Fri 28-Sep-12 07:29:40

Me too other, I even cringe at Build A Bear bears wearing clothes.

BUT if the dog is naked or has very thin skin and fur then it can be excused. If your dog has to wear clothes then you may aswell make them seasonal ones!

nooka Fri 28-Sep-12 07:45:50

No clothes for my dog. I don't think he'd be very impressed! But then he does like to lie out in the snow in the winter so I'm fairly confident he is warm (he's smooth coated, but with a waterproof outer layer and a very fine inner layer of fur). My great aunt had whippets with winter coats, but they were really like horse blankets rather than clothes.

We do have a special night time collar that dh calls his 'disco lights' - it has a LED cord that flashes clockwise around it's length.

stowsettler Fri 28-Sep-12 13:08:12

My two Jack Russells are far too hard for clothes. Well, Wilma is hard but Fred is a great big poofter sensitive little soul who might quite like a nice jacket.

birdofthenorth Fri 28-Sep-12 13:11:35

None. They are dogs. They descended from wolves, they can survive the odd chill!

FredWorms Fri 28-Sep-12 13:16:43

There's a guy 'round here who dresses his terriers in baseball caps with an elastic band that goes under the jaw/neck. It's just thick and cruel.

Bandanas are borderline too imo.

Giddypants Fri 28-Sep-12 13:18:40

None I have a Heinz 57, hounds crossed with terriers and a Doberman! Reasonably hairy (sheds) and a nice layer of insulation, (not over weight) thing is he point blank refuses to go out for a walk if its cold or wet! Really hates getting his paws wet and if its windy he just refuses to walk. Really placid dog, even good at the vets (he licked her when she was poking around his broken toe!)
Likes the warmth will lay under the radiator/fire or in the smallest slither of sun!
He's a sweety grin

SarahStratton Fri 28-Sep-12 13:46:18

None. They are dogs. They descended from wolves, they can survive the odd chill!

Try telling that to LittleDog. Would you seriously take a dog with no fur worth mentioning outside in the winter? It would be as cruel as taking a child out in vest and pants.

My Spaniel has a coat of Burrs and Sticky Weed (pic on profile)

D0oinMeCleanin Fri 28-Sep-12 14:03:17

Whiggy is tiny and totally fat free envy with a very, very fine, sleek coat. Sighthounds don't do cold.

My terrier is half bald due to a previous skin condition, however regular combing and his nice new shampoo seem to be encouraging his coat to grow thicker, so maybe this winter he won't shiver so much and he won't need a coat.

FredWorms Fri 28-Sep-12 16:05:09

youveCat, wtf is that on your dog's head?

It looks like a hideous growth.

NorbertDentressangle Fri 28-Sep-12 16:09:23

I don't have a dog but I had to add that the only dog in clothes that I've ever seen and thought was OK was a tiny little dog (not sure of breed but small, weak looking thing) in a black T-shirt with 'SECURITY' emblazoned across the back.

grin

I nearly fell over laughing

hippermiddleton Fri 28-Sep-12 16:31:47

lady dog has a fabulous diamante collar for special occasions; boy dog has a large dark blue velvet bowtie on elastic.

They both have their own magnificent, rippling black coats that make them look like they're sporting those enormous Dennis Basso faux fur jackets on QVC, complete with speckly ermine spots underneath, so no need for extra outerwear.

SarahStratton Fri 28-Sep-12 17:02:35

Norbert, I think you've met LittleDog grin

fredworms that is his sticky weed hat, that he made himself

stupid spaniel <proud owner>

FredWorms Fri 28-Sep-12 23:25:20

Oh, but it's beautiful!

Clever dog.

grin

MissBetseyTrotwood Sat 29-Sep-12 12:46:39

Fleecy rainbow housecoat that DH hates.
RGT walking out coat in bright red.

Do very cool house collars count? I also bought a very nice brown bridle leather lead and sighthound collar; I use it more often than I use the car so I figured I'd get a nice one.

He's an ex racer, whose former life has taken its toll on his bones. He needs to keep warm so his joints don't seize up! That's my excuse anyway.

SpicyPear Sat 29-Sep-12 12:59:45

SpicyDog has a Hurtta insulated raincoat for sub zero and snow days. She hates it almost as much as she hates the snow and people laugh at her in it sad.

Mine has Equafleece jumpers too, toboldlygo and they are indeed fab!

She is a PRT but has rather scraggly, thinnish fur which doesn't keep her at all warm in winter - we get a lot of snow here, and temps way below 0°.

I too have a spaniel who laughs in the face of cold/wet/snow and then proceeds to pond dive whatever the weather. But I did buy him a bomber jacket from Amazon last year. The pic might be on my profile. He was not impressed. It won't fit him this year sad

sleepysox Sun 30-Sep-12 11:09:32

My chihuahua has two jumpers, a lightweight fleece hoody, a dress! A winter coat and two fleece hoodies!!

TheCatInTheHairnet Mon 01-Oct-12 13:54:34

I bought my little dog a bright yellow coat the first winter we had him. When we went for a regular walk, all my friends' dogs freaked and tried to eat him, so it went in the bin! grin

CakeMeIAmYours Tue 02-Oct-12 14:28:40

None - he's quite furry enough!

He does have a couple of bandanas which he likes to wear on special occasions...he also has a hi-vis/reflective bandana which he wears when we are out running in the dark mornings.
