The doghouse

Pedigree Chum Dentiflex - my boy just nearly choked to death on one of these.

I gave one of these to my boy - an 8 month old terrier type dog. Right size chew for his breed and weight. Supervised him with it. He was chewing away happily and then suddenly started to choke. He was running around in fear so I couldn't get to him and obviously as he became weaker and more frightened I managed to catch him. Got into his mouth and a third of the chew was completely wedged into his windpipe, I couldn't even see it but could feel it. I managed to get a finger down the side and got it out and he's ok now - shaky and quiet but ok. I think the shape is dangerous and while it is made of a spongy type substance and has holes running through it for just such an eventuality I imagine, the holes were actually totally compressed by the wall of his windpipe and no air could get through.

Please don't use these. I nearly lost my dog today. I'd never usually give him such chews but someone bought it for him and I didn't see the harm.

Just wanted to let people know.

Thanks for the info. I've bought these in the past. I'll look for a safer alternative

I wouldn't give anything to my dog with a Mars (Pedigree Chum, Pal, Royal Canin etc) or Nestle (Bakers, Bonio, Purina etc) branding.

Looks for natural treats to help keep his teeth clean like dried tripe/cow ears etc. There is always a risk of choking on tough chews, my dog does it occasionally with cows ears but manages to cough up.

Keep away from raw hide as it is usually a by product from the leather tanning industry in china and full of nasty chemicals (we get raw hide Xmas stockings or presents for our dog every year from relatives and they go straight in the bin).

Op! What a shock that must have been. I'm glad to hear you and your dpup are recovering. I bought one of these for the first time 2 weeks ago. Thanks for the advice. I won't do it again.
