People letting there dog of the lead!

So the other day me and my Oh we're walking our rather large dog he is friendly but working with dogs ino dogs no matter how friendly if put into a situation they are uncomfortable with can change so quickly. Anyways we were walking out dog and out one year old daughter who has just turned one on a field all of a sudden a big put ill came changeing at us we could see he was not aggressive but like I said it can all change the woman diddnt even run or call her dog (who was off the lead ours was on the lead) my OH grabbed the other dogs collar too separate the dogs she finally came over and said oh my dog is friendly..but uno what love my dog may not have been that is why we have him on a lead..why do people think it is okay to allow your dog to run up to another dog who is on the lead also while I have my baby wth me?? I don't get it just because your dog is friendly doesn't mean everyone else's is.. Could you imagine if ours was aggressive or they just turned on each other? I had my daughter so I couldn't do anything God knows what could of happened! Why don't people think????

We have a staff, who has only ever shown aggression once. I was heavily pregnant with dd, about 37 weeks, and we were all out for a walk, dog on the lead as usual and this massive German Shepherd came running over towards me, teeth bared and snarling. My dog went into full on Staffy mode and I panicked. Thankfully DP saw what was happening and grabbed her lead as I was about to get pulled over. This twat comes running over saying "oh he's friendly, don't worry". No he fucking isn't you absolute moron, get a lead on it!!!!

I just get wound up so much and people don't get it it's happened a few times we used to walk a little guy and out of no were this big Great Dane came out of no were and attacked him when the woman came round the corner she refused to believe it had happened saying her dog was the friendliest dog she knows...grr pains

It riles me that people are completely unaware of their own dog, and of the responsibility of owning a dog. I don't mean to sound a bore, but seriously, if you're not prepared to train/socialise a dog and make sure it doesn't behave like that why get one? Our dog is awesome, proper lovely, yet I would never let her off the lead where there were other people/dogs, have never ever left her unsupervised with the kids and we've trained her to come/heel/sit/stay etc so she doesn't jump all over visitors or people in the park. My mums next door neighbours have a powderpuff with feet (no idea but he's vicious) and he bit my dd3 who was walking past the gate. I took him to the door and told the owner who said "oh no he'd never" I was tempted to tell her if it happens again I shall see if he can fly

You're so right though, they look puzzled as if they can't understand what you expect them to do! Eh, train the animal you are responsible for??? Dd was in bits, she's a brave wee soul but this really got to her. She keeps asking our dog "xxxx you won't bite me will you? You love me." Yet if it was our staff running out of the gate and biting people we'd be in the bloody Daily Mail!!!

In all honesty, I think they should all be on a lead if you want to let your dog roam. Put them on a 50ft lead, you still have control. All dogs no matter what can change in a second. I have complete faith in my dog but like I said there it takes a second why would you risk it??

Such as I new a customer who paid a lot of money to get her dalmation professionally trained as a puppy it must of been about six she let it off the lead as per useal she called her back but she was fixated on another dog and ran over and was attacked. The dog of the lead wasn't aggressive but the dog she approached was if she just had her on a lead it wouldn't of happened.

What tosh!!! If you can't trust your on the lead dog to behave when other dogs come up in a friendly manner then you shouldn't be walking it in places where your likely to come across other dogs off lead!

I walk up to six dogs at a time. If I kept them all on leads I'd end up resembling a fecking Maypole.

Like I said I trust my dog but it only takes a second people clearly don't understand dogs and understand that put in a position of feeling uncomfttabule or pressured can act out. And actually we did for two years stop walking our dog on fields, streets..eat we had to walk him early hours in the morning and late and night because of inconsiderable arseholes who let their dogs wonder up to people while there still on the other side of the field. So no it's not tosh it's being a responsible dog owner. Why should I have to walk my dog somewhere else because other people are idiots and let their "friendly dog who won't Listen to basic commands" wonder up to my dog and make him feel uncomfortable. And ino it's hard especially with six dogs it's just from my experience..

I normally have my dig off lead, she prefers it and I prefer it. She us friendly. If I see another dog on lead I will ask if its OK for her to approach. But often I see dogs on leads and don't really understand why they are on lead as they are friendly too. Some people prefer there dog to always be on a lead and that is up to them but as long as dog owner is respectful it is OK to have your dog off lead too you know

Such as I lf a person was walking there dog on a field had it on a lead and a halty. An old man is walking him. A hyperactive friendly dog come comes over trying to make friends is being lovely as such the old mans dog might feel uncomftabule with this the old man can walk away yes but the dog off the lead will follow and this could result in the friendly dog being attacked!

I'm not attacking anyone who allows there dog off the lead I understand some are really good obey commands as such. However there are a few literally every time we take our dog out this has happened and has so many arguments we had to walk out dog in the early mornings and late at night. We though why should we do this we any to walk out dog who is fine BTW with our daughter in nice family walks as soon as we do so some idiot lets there dog approach us and my OH has to separate the dogs because such as my dog starts getting hyper I would say jumping up as such..which could result in an attack if that dog feels threatened. It's all ifs and buts, but because people take these risks dogs are attacked and sometimes die.

I think all dogs should be on a lead want them to run free get a 50ft lead or so why is it so hard??

I think it's cruel to always keep a dog on lead! They cannot and do not display their natural behaviours. Dogs who are only dogs should be given the opportunity to mix with other dogs from time to time. If your not prepared to allow them this freedom you should not have a dog. Simple really!!!

I walk my dog off lead if it's a secure open space. You know why? Because I have TRAINED her not to approach other dogs. Just because your dog isn't allowed off-lead, please don't make stupid assumptions about all dog owners.

No way. My dog does 3 times the walk I do because she is off lead and zig zaps all over. Incidentally she has been snapped at by other dogs (mainly dogs on leads) and it still hasn't changed my mind about leads. I think being on a lead gives a dog something to protect (you) and acts more aggressively than a dog off lead.

Like PovertyPain I walk up to six off lead at a time. That's our insurance maximum. In practice we tend to stay to four, that way if we do need to go back on lead it's only two leads in each hand, not three.

I'll drive for up to fifteen miles though to find a really good bit of empty nowhere to do it!

My dog is reactive with other dogs purely because he's now been attacked 7 times by dogs where we live that aren't under control. The most recent time was by 2 Jack Russels who attacked him, one from the front and one from the back. Neither had leads or even collars on! When I told the guy walking them that he should have them on a lead he told me they were too wee for that! I mean wtf! It's people like that I have the problem with. As others have said: why get a dog and not bother to train it? It boggles my mind that people are actually that stupid!
