she refused to walk anymore part way through the morning walk and i ended up carrying her home
keeps sitting on her bum as if its painful or itchy
has had a poo..hard / normal one and when i picked up noticed it had gel like substance ?anal gland stuff
Ive had a look at the rear end and had a poke but can't feel anything -she didn't wince or cry out

since home she's walked a few times , has eaten but is much quieter

shall I take to OOH vet clinic ?

Check them yourself?

Pull her tail up and place you finger and thumb either side of her anus towards the bottom "corners"

If you feel two lumps, they need emptying. They are very easy to do if you want to google it but it does smell

Its very straight forward to do yourself, but wear rubber gloves, and lots and lots of kitchen roll.

And dear god the smell...

do you have to squeeze really hard?

nothing seems to happen

Quite firmly. In an upward movement. But if you can't do it, a vet can. Sometimes it has to be done internally

nope ,cant get anything out

think I'll wait and see how things go

what are the signs of impaction or infection..would it be painful when I tried to squeeze?

The smell will be like nothing you've ever smelt before...I knew my dog needed hers emptying when I could smell it, always took her to the vet as I didn't realise I could have done it myself.

I would take her to the vet. Even if it is just anal glands, full and impacted ones can be very painful for her.

Having said that, the main reason I say get a vet to check her out is in case it is not anal glands. Certainly nothing you have mentioned really suggests it is, to me.

If the gel substance was anal gland fluid, you would smell it more than see it. It has an incredibly potent fishy smell. Very hard to miss. You would certainly have mentioned the smell. So I think that on her poo was diet related. A coating on poo can sometimes indicate something in their food that doesn't agree with them. If it was anal glands, you would also expect her to be scooting (rubbing her bottom along the floor/carpet) or maybe nibbling at her tail, bottom or legs/feet.

Thanks for your replies , have just seen them ..I called the vets this am and explained and there was only emergency appts today. The receptionist said she thought it was worms so I have wormed her and we'll see if that helps.

She was same today on our walk..was fine or a while then kept paying attention to her bum and sat down and refused to move. Poo was completely normal ..no smell or gel stuff.
