Pooping in designated area!

Just got a rehome lovely springer spaniel age 7. V obedient, slightly submissive but on the whole a lovely dog. Now I have a big garden and would like to designate an area for pooping. Can I train the dog to poop there or am I on to a loser? Many thanks

Worth a try, my DD and her DP managed to do it with both their dogs.

thanks for replying. I wonder if your DD has any tips. I think I am going to set aside an area and clearly designate it poo corner. Then take dog out on lead first thing to wee.....praise and give treat. But then do I hang around in poo corner until he wants to do a poo or walk him around the garden on lead and when he starts to hover, take (drag) to him to poo corner?

I am a novice dog trainer as you can tell!

I've no idea how its done but I had a neighbour a while back who's dog would go within a 2ft radius of a post in the lawn (wee and poo). So it must be do-able.

Watching this with interest.

I'd hang around in 'poo corner' if I were you. My 5mo lab x has tried to poo on pavements a couple of times recently and dragging him on to nearby grass is not easy, we don't get far.

Yes, think they did hang around in poo corner.

The area they chose was full of small rocks, but grass might be better as most dogs seem to prefer it. I think they just started by leading the dogs there and telling them to 'pee on the rocks'.

The things is both dogs are trained to pee when asked so maybe you need to start by getting your dog to understand what you want from him/her by training to pee on command and then taking it from there.

It really didn't take long to train them.

My dog is also trained to pee on command before I go out without her and before bed.

It might be worth waiting a while to figure out her "internal timetable" iyswim. Dlurcher goes out in the garden for a wee first thing, but doesn't do a poo until she's taken for a walk a few hours later so she rarely poos in the garden which is great.
