We got a dog! And having some problems... Help?

Okay, so around 3 weeks ago we got a dog, this is a first for me having always had cats. We also have 2 guinea pigs, a 2yo and a 4yo.

I've noticed a few problems and I am keen to try and train them out of him, however having never had a dog before, I'm not too sure if I am doing things right.

He gets really really excited, far too easily and jumps up a lot this is a bloody problem because he is 6 stone... He has pretty much knocked me over and also knocked the kids over because he just runs straight through you when you open the door (you literally can't open the door if he is behind it as he stays up against it trying to get out before it is open).

He steals any teddy bears lying around (doesn't touch toys or chew anything else so I accept I may just have to keep teddies out of his way)

He pulls on the lead 70% of the time, this is a problem because of the previously mentioned 6stone, I struggle to walk him.

He has pood in the house 3 times (however I have noticed that when he needs to go, he really needs to go, so this might get better when I am able to notice his cues more easily)

He is constantly sniffing at my butt/private area (I swear I am clean and don't stink!) This one is really getting to me because it feels like his nose is permanently up my arse.

He steals food if he can, he gets put in the hall if anyone is eating.

I'm tired and I think there probably is more, any advice from more experienced owners would be greatly appreciated.

i would take him to a dog training class first of all.

what breed is he? how old? what is his background? is he neutered?

all of these things will affect his training.

good luck.

I'm looking in to classes and was also planning on signing us both up to a dog and owner fit class to add some more time outside together.

He's an Olde English Bulldogge and is nearly 3 years old, he had a very good background and is mostly trained well, he is eager to please, very happy and not aggressive/dog aggressive etc. He has not been neutered yet as his previous owners were planning to breed him, however I will be booking him in to get neutered very soon. That is another problem, he humps a lot (people) but I know to solve that it's neutering.

Not necessarily, I would read up on it a bit first and talk to your vet. It's a good idea to neuter if you're not using him for breeding but you need to make yourself fully aware of the pros and cons. In some breeds it can pose health risks later on. It certainly isn't a guarantee that it will stop any behavioural problems.

I absolutely second the training classes. They are invaluable. They will teach you all aspects of dog handling. Sometimes you are inadvertently teaching and reinforcing an unwanted behaviour without realising it. My boy knows the hand signal for sit, which is me raising my hand. Trouble is to then make any other hand signal involves first raising my hand and he will sit before he realises that I want him to do something else! It's good for bonding too, you'll find he's much more responsive to you once you're working together.

Good luck with your new addition anyway. I wouldn't be without a dog in the house. Smile

training classes are hard work but sooo worthwhile

most of your issues will be sorted by what you learn there and just by him settling in

be consistent :)
