The doghouse

My dog ate a chocolate button... he'll be OK right?

I got out a bag of the Asda large chocolate buttons, and as I was pouring some into a little bowl (keeping the bag with me is bad for my waistline Grin ) one bounced out and my deceptively quick labrador had it before I could get to it.

For a large dog, a small piece like that shouldn't have an effect should it? They're about the size of 2p coins. I think they've had little bits of human chocolate before and been OK. Technically they're my parents dogs and I'm babysitting whilst they're away though, so I just had a mini panic. A piece that small shouldn't harm him should it? Confused Help!

It's fine, it's when eaten in bulk and proper i.e. dark chocolate, that is harmful. Glares at ddog who once nicked and ate almost a whole box of Celebrations, foil and all (she was fine).

Should be fine given the quantity eaten and size of the dog.

For future reference, and in case other dog owners click on this thread and need it, here is a toxicity calculator and advice .

Thank you all, and thank you catz for that calculator! Would you believe that I have actually had dogs all my life, but this is the first time I've had to look after them on my own iyswim and it made me a bit nervous! I'm sure after two weeks I'll be much better.

These two did once get into an entire tin of mince pies when they were young (the little darlings pushed the kitchen chairs out and climbed / jumped onto the kitchen counter) and I know that raisins are apparently toxic too. They slept beautifully for about 6 hours but apart from that were absolutely fine! So they have form for being reasonably bomb-proof Grin

There is a useful leaflet on here about pets and poisons

Phew! Careful though - someone the other day was telling me of a dog that died after just one belgian chocolate.

Lab ate a full box of Thorntons a few years ago. He was taken to the vets for obs but didn't even have loose poo. Probably proves Thorntons isn't real chocolate.
