How to deal with first season?

I have a bitch which is coming up to 7 months old.

She has not had her first season yet but I have never had an entire bitch before. I know what happens medically but what do I do with her at home. Is it safe to walk her still etc?
How long will it generally last for?

Before everyone jumps on the neutering bandwagon, she has a very serious condition and vets are still debating whether she is too risky for the op, hence why she is entire!

Most people don't neuter before the first season anyway Smile

It's about 3 weeks all in...some people don't walk them at all, but personally as long as you're sensible about it it should be fine.

So walk in quieter places at times when there's less likely to be anyone else about and put her on lead if you see another dog...and warn the owner if they come close.

If you can driving her to somewhere rather than walking from your house is a good idea because then she doesn't leave a scent trail home.

My girl was very sleepy and clingy and out of sorts for most of her season, so it made dealing with it really easy because she didn't really want to go out much, I walked her on the lead on roads instead of parks/ fields and didn't walk her at all in the week when she was most fertile. We did some doggy games (sprinkles is great) and training when she was getting a bit bored at home, but mostly she wanted to be curled up on my lap - all 32 kilos of her!
