We brought our lovely bichon frise home yesterday.
She's 11 weeks old and we all simply adore her.
We have a playpen (our old travel cot) for her to go in whilst nobody is watching/playing/feeding etc her (part of house training)
She has a puppy pad at one end and her bed and toys at the other end.
Her crate will arrive next week but getting her to willingly want to go in is going to take a few weeks by the looks of things and I don't want to rush it and ruin crate training.

So last night she was walked and then put to bed in her pen (she gets a piece of chicken every time we place her in the pen so she associates it with good things)
This was at 11:30 and she started crying and barking. This went on ALL NIGHT (despite me taking her out every 3 hours through the night) and eventually we brought her into bed with us at 5am (seriously, she didn't stop barking from 11:30, she didn't even tire herself out despite not sleeping at all during the day)

As soon as we brought her in she was sleeping within seconds, she woke at 7 so I took her out, she did her business then we went back to sleep until 9 when she woke again so I took her out (she peed again, outside and was rewarded etc)

Every time she goes into her pen she cries and barks. We ignore but it doesn't stop.

I know it's still very early days but I really don't want to get into the habit of her sleeping in our bed until she is house trained completely (about a year old I'd say)

What can I do to help her (and the rest of us) before I have my neighbour banging on the door to complain (I wouldn't blame them lol)

If anyone has any advice or tips then I would really really appreciate hearing them.

Thanks so much Smile

It's a massive change for a puppy to go from being with mum and siblings 24 hours a day to spending the whole night alone. I would either bring her into your bedroom/move yourself down to where her pen is until she's more settled then gradually move her to where you want her to sleep/retreat back to your bedroom.

Our dogs sleep in on our beds. When we get a pup (we've had three in recent years, gluttons for punishment clearly) I decamp with them to the sofa bed until they're reliably sleeping through the night, at which point I'll start taking upstairs to sleep in the bedroom with me. We got our most recent pup in very early January last year, by the end of that February he was reliable enough to be in the bedroom.

We don't use crates at all at night, only for being left during the day.

We have never used a crate but for the first few days dh slept downstairs with Eric. He was a star though,he was the last to leave his Mum so the breeder moved his mum out for the last two nights which meant by the time we got him he wasn't too bothered about being alone tbh. He never needed to go out from dh taking him out at 11pm until I got up at 6am. I'd definitely suggest either sleeping downstairs with him or taking him upstairs to sleep in the same room as you.

Monty howled and whined for most of the first night, in between toilet breaks. The second night I put his crate in the living room and slept on the sofa. Took about four or five nights before I was able to creep out of the room once he was asleep and go to bed. Now the routine is out for a last wee and straight into the crate. It's back in the kitchen now. He loves it in there, it's got a blanket draped over it so it's darker and cosy. I don't know how we're ever going to get rid of it.

It does get better but it will take a few sleepless nights and then you'll have a well behaved puppy that sleeps easily.

Thanks for the replies.
If you don't crate then how do you ensure that they don't pee and poo everywhere?

She's a bit calmer when in her pen today (just a bit lol) but I bet if we went upstairs she would go crazy!

We took him out every 20 to thirty minutes when he was awake. He never messed between 11pm and 6am and he was fully trained within a fortnight. We only had a couple of accidents and that was when I didn't pay attention closely enough to notice him sniffing and circling. He does seem to have a bladder and bowels of steel though because he only toilets on his walks which sometimes means he goes 12 hours between last pee before bed and first pee after the school run next day.

We always sleep with new pups - and older rescue dogs - on the 'dog' sofa downstairs. The DC used to draw up a rota so that no one got more puppy cuddles than they were entitled to Grin. They don't wee and poo everywhere - they don't soil a sleeping area so if she gets up and moves away you know she wants the loo. I've had dogs for 30yrs and have never used a crate - just cordoned off a small area when needed, using furniture usually. We don't have carpets in most of the downstairs though - that really helps!

My ddog slept on my bed on a baby blanket since I brought him home at 8 weeks never once has he done a pee or poop on the bed.
Like catsrus said dogs don't do their business where they sleep so you just need to be aware when they get up and move they might need to be taken out to toilet.
Mine after about a 3 weeks no longer needed to go to toilet in the middle of the night, he will now sleep through from 11pm till about 9am.

Our pup came home last Thurs.
I slept on the sofa with her for a week she couldn't handle half hour of whining Hmm and now she's in our bed.
I have her crate and puppy pad next to our bed set up so I can drop her down but she can't run off.

Not once has she toiletted on the sofa/bed and will wake and whine to get down. Usually about 6ish and then will sleep again.

Maybe it's just her but most animals don't like to toilet where they sleep...I'm sure she would be fine.

We had ours in bed with us for the first three weeks, then he went into his crate fine and settled.
He would wake us up if he needed to go out.
It was lovely having him there, he'd curl up at the back of my neck. Couldn't do it now as he's too big and bonkers!

We've always had a crate ready before we got a pup and they've been crated from day one (or I should say 'night one'). We found a hot water bottle, thickly wrapped, and a ticking clock, also thickly wrapped, worked wonders is settling them down. There are also heated crate pads that are really great, too.

Although I do recall coming down a few mornings to find DS1 or DS2 on the couch sleeping with a cuddled up Lab puppy. And our current Dachsie has DH wrapped around his paw. He now sleeps right next to DH's side of the bed, in a puffy dog bed placed on a chair so he can 'see DH during the night and not be lonely'. I've gone Hmm and told him he's officially 'that old man with that little dog!' Grin

My Daxie pup was a turd of the first order when trying to get her settle downstairs on her crate for the first few nights. I got some advice on here about allowing her to sleep where she is near me so is in a crate next to my bed and she's been great ever since. She's now happier to be in her crate during the day when we got out because of it.

WeinerDiva love your NN

Was wondering if it referred to the breed or……..? But since you mention your pup my question is answered. Grin

they're quite something, aren't they? We went from a Lab to a Dachshund. Talk about culture shock!!!

Thanks so much everyone, it's very helpful hearing about all your experiences.

Ww brought her pen up to our room last night and she lasted about an hour before the crying and barking started. I put her in our bed and she stayed there till 7am (in between toilet breaks)

I did try to return her to her pen a number of times but she cried and barked until she was back in the bed.

Hmm....she's a very determined puppy lol.

Thankfully we haven't had a single accident yesterday or today so she is learning really fast (the fact that we take her out every half hour probably helps too!)

I'm going to try sleeping downstairs with her tonight, that way if she cries in her pen then she's not right next to the neighbours bedroom.

Wish me luck Grin

Hi Pink, it's really hard the first few weeks, WeinerPup is 16 weeks old and will now sleep in her crate for about 3-4 hours before squeaking that she wants to come in our bed. Give it a couple of weeks of just settling in then you can start being a bit more strict. It's hard though when you have neighbours!

AcrossThePond, I had the name before the dog because I really like a certain brand of hotdog Blush

I had a StaffyLab cross before this breed. Stubborn isn't the word!
