The doghouse

Affected by in season bitch

Ddog is a 10 month old male Labrador. A few days ago we met one of his doggie pals on the green behind our house. She was offlead so we let ddog off and they started to interact. Ddog started to lick the other dogs rear end and then tried to climb on top of her. (Managed to get on her head so not particularly accurate!). I immediately commented on his different behaviour and the owner then says that her bitch is on heat and maybe she should take her home!!
After she left ddog became hyper, nose to the ground, running backwards and forwards and not recalling. Since then his behaviour has not been great when we are out. He seems to be in hunting mode, constantly sniffing the ground and his previously reasonable recall has become a bit hit and miss. His behaviour in our garden is different as well as he is constantly sniffing the air and whining. (The green is behind our garden.)
Has anyone experienced this and does this mean he will always react this strongly when meeting an in season bitch? I was hoping to either not castrate or at least wait until around 18 months old but these last few days have been very difficult!

If she lives nearish he'll still be able to smell her...it should settle down when her season finishes.

Eric's walks are dominated by whichever bitch is in season tbh. So whichever one he gets a scent of we will eventually end up outside their house Hmm His current female frenzy lives about a mile away and no matter which route we set out on we invariably end up outside her house. Thankfully her owner is friendly and finds it funny and the previous one was someone I knew anyway. It's only when the bitch next door is in season that it becomes a pain as Eric sits crying at the door like a lovesick teen.

Has he had his bits off? Might help, although I know of a "done" dog to whom it made not the slightest bit of difference his whole life!

I would talk to your vet about having him done sooner tbh.

The other dog owner is an idiot for letting an in season bitch off lead - but in my 30+ yrs of dog ownership I would say that entire males can be a real problem - not just to in season bitches.

One of my spayed females was VERY attractive to an entire Red Setter we used to meet. The owner kept telling me she must be in season Hmm. My current neutered male has an admirer - a male Golden who is a real sex pest - I met his owner rushing to get him from someone who had found him outside her door. He'd followed the scent of a bitch in Season, left his owner in a field and crossed a number of roads to get to this bitch's front door.
