Healthy dog snacks

Any ideas for healthy dog snacks instead of biscuits? He's not overweight but the vet said we need to make sure he maintains his weight, especially as he has arthritis. I give him tiny bits of carrot but I'm wary of upsetting his stomach.

Thanks in advance.

Both of mine Adore bits of cut up Apple

So your wanting low fat snacks, Apple is a good one, most dogs like them. Bananas, any fruit really except grapes, raisins, avocado and the stones and cores.

Steamed/boiled vegetables, or maybe some small chunks of game like pheasant, rabbit etc? Game is very low fat.

Or, if he's a sensible chewer and won't try to swallow stuff whole what about fresh (from the butcher, not dried from the pet shop) chicken feet and Beef paddywacks?
They are chewy rather than crunchy like bone and rich in chondroitin and glucosamine with is good for dogs with arthritis?

Dried fish skins. I think Morrison's sell them in packs but my fishmonger also does them dirt cheap. Not an everyday snack but worth looking into?

For my uber sensitive dog I use any left over lamb, chicken and beef cut into tiny cubes and stored in my freezer. I can just take out what I need and it quickly defrosts for the days treats.
I also use Fish4dogs mini sea jerky cubes and the sea skin strips.
If she is being very good at obedience and for a very occasional treat I give her Burns Kelties broken up to go in her kong wobbler.
She is also fond of slices of apple.

My dog has behavioural issues and joint problems so treats are hugely important for training purposes but he also needs to be really lean.

I adjust his food rather than his treats, he doesn't particularly notice if there's 50g of his dinner missing for a while...he'd soon notice if I was rewarding him less or with things he doesn't value as much while working on the behavioural issues, lol.

Are you currently training? Perrito snacks are brilliant, cut up very small and are pure meat and are not at all messy. If not training then I'd wean the dog off snacks, or divide up their daily food allowance. Lily's kitchen dried fish skins, Fish4dogs and Hollings are good for dried liver and tripe.

Thank you for the suggestions. :)

He has a puzzle training toy which he loves and keeps him quiet. I use it every day. I was putting small biscuits in it but thought I'd switch and make it healthier because he's getting really good and can find the treats very quickly!

I was taking some of his food away and rewarding him with it when he does something. However, he rejects his food in this way. Confused In his bowl with a load of other kibbles, he'll hoover it up but give him one or two and he looks at me like this....Hmm

TenerifeSea · 30/04/2015 21:30

I feed my dog Apple skin, I wouldn't ever feed her cores or seeds though as those are definitely 100% poisonous

myusernameisusername · 30/04/2015 23:34

i read online before giving it to her that the skins are dangerous too

basildonbond · 01/05/2015 06:39

There's nothing wrong with apple skins - in large amounts the seeds are dangerous as they contain minute amounts of cyanide when broken down so it's best to avoid the cores but the skins are fine
