The doghouse

Desperately seeking Spinone

After being messed about a bit I am now back on the hunt for a brown Spinone pup.
I have done all the obvious stuff - registered with Champdogs, spoken with the Spin society, met with local breeders etc but these beautiful dogs are like hens teeth.
I am hoping that someone from the Doghouse might happen to know good people who are breeding good dogs for good reasons?
Please help!

The best person always to speak to will be the breed club secretary - good luck with your search.

Thanks, have already spoken to her, was provided with a list of breeders and phone numbers but many are out of date - guess people just forget to pass new numbers on.
Thus I am appealing on here in the hope that someone has a friend who has a Spin etc...

I think the people who make the dogmatic head collars have spinone's, maybe have a look on their website and get in touch with them.

Have you tried the KC?

Oh no! I thought you had reserved a boy puppy? What happened?

I had - bit of a 'mix up' by breeder, my boy no longer available (sob).

Blimey. How can they say you've got a puppy then sell it to someone else?

Don't get me started! Really upset but trying to think onwards and upwards.

Ave you rang Gaynor Killick ( puppy register ) 01895447625.

Might be worth mentioning you were promised a puppy then messed about.

Had you been to see the puppy and put your name down for it?

Get yourself to the regional gun dog shows, Crufts and Discover Dogs, and anything at all organised by the breed club (shows, fun days etc). Get on first name terms with a load of breeders, find out who the popular stud dogs are, and ask their owners who is planning litters.

Sounds like you had a lucky escape.
No reputable breefer would agree to sell a puppy without having met or at least spoken to you.

How would they know you were suitable for a spinone puppy?

You need to see the breeder, mum and puppies in their own environment too to make sure you are happy with everything.

I had spoken to them extensively on the phone, had to write an essay re my circumstances, work, house, kids etc.

Was booked in to visit but a verbal agreement had been reached then suddenly they disclosed a mistake had been made re the waiting list.

Great advice Sandthorn - I have done quite a bit of this.

Think my problem is that the breed seem to be becoming a 'show dog' and (in my limited experience) the orange dogs are favoured.
My heart is sold on the browns which are somewhat harder to come by.
Not trying to be difficult, I just love their squidgy brown noses!

They are worth waiting for. My boy is curled up at my feet.

Personally I prefer the orange but if you're set on a brown then I'm sure you'll be glad you waited for one!

I have an orange roan male Spinone who has just turned 1, we got him from Hampshire, I think we were just lucky with the timing as only waited a month before a successful mating and after meeting the breeder and her dogs, we were smitten with these beautiful creatures. The breeder has recently acquired a brown bitch who I think she is planning to breed from, she is also an assured KC breeder and certainly highly recommended from us Smile
