How to stop dog weeing on rug

Dog is toilet trained, always asks if she wants to go out aside of walking times, has never gone to the toilet in the house before aside from twice, both times when she had been left more than normal due to us being late back from somewhere.

I have bought a new rug, and until this time there have never been any rugs/carpets in the house-only natural wooden floorboards. On the odd time she has weed in the house, It's been by the back door in the kitchen.

She hasn't been left too long or not walked or anything that could cause her to need to wee in the house- but for some reason I think she just LIKES weeing on the new rug! She's even done it in front of me, when she'd not long since been walked and she hadn't 'asked' me to go out . I think maybe because she isn't used to carpets, she's decided she likes weeing on it.

She's a big dog, and I am heaving at the moment because despite spending ages washing the rug the sitting room still smells of wee and It's gross.

Is there anything we can do? I really don't think It's an issue with toileting as she's trained and nothing about her routine has changed.

Any tips on A)Getting the smell out of my bloody brand new rug, and of how to deter her from doing this?

My dog does this, I think it's a territorial thing. In your case, the rug is new so the dog wants to make it hers IYSWIM.

No suggestions but watching with interest to see if anyone has any ideas.

You need to give the rug (and any surrounding areas/underneath said rug) which may have got wee on them a really good clean with something that will neutralise the odour. If it still smells like wee she's going to want to keep weeing there.

You can either use a product specifically for the task (such as Simple Solutions Urine Destroyer, brilliant stuff available from PaH) or make up a solution of biological washing liquid.

If it's very sudden then it's worth getting her checked for a UTI, especially if she's been very reliable as far as house training goes previously.

Thanks wearegroot.

Good point. I'll get scrubbing (grrr).

She had a urine infection some time ago and was whimpering and licking herself a lot-I don't think this is occurring again but if it continues I will get her to a vet. Thanks :)

Urine off is a good product for cat wee which is even stronger.

Yep, get some of the urine neutraliser stuff as she'll be drawn to wee on it again due to the scent -even if you couldn't smell it.

Thanks folks. I've made a solution of soda crystals and almond essence for now, not had a chance to get out to the shops-it seems to have worked but I think the scent is still sort of 'up my nose'. Urine off-that name really amuses me.

It's completely straight to the point Grin
