The doghouse

Getting them to behave when exiting the house.

When I walk my two dogs individually, I can get them to sit and behave while exiting the front door.
But when together, it’s a struggle as they both get a bit too excited and wanting to dart outside.
One gets quite yappy and jumps on the other one even before the door opens (not in an aggressive manner).
Telling them to calm down and be quiet seems to fall on deaf ears.
I have tried going back in doors and repeat but this is not doing the trick.
Currently I’m having to shorten the leads and keep them on either side and walk quickly before I annoy anyone.
Any suggestions.

What I've done with mine is teach them both a good strong 'wait' individually, then shape that into them having to sit and wait with leads on in the house, then in the doorway, then as I open the door, then as I step out of the front door.

Using that method I can then step outside myself, before cueing them to follow me through the door, then another wait just outside, before setting off.

The trick is to teach the 'wait' individually first and then start bringing them together once they've both mastered it.

The best thing about it is that the reward is actually getting to go on the walk, so the motivation to want to get it right is always there.
