Where did you get your dog from?

Just curious, given the anti-breeding feeling (been reading the posts on the first page), where your dog actually came from? We got ours from a farmer - with a pet springer spaniel - who didn't realise that the collie (sheepdog) he'd borrowed from his neighbour would be able to climb out of the horsebox window. So no thought at all went into his breeding. So where did yours come from?

the local paper. met mum and dad, gorgeous pup. no probs

minsmum · 13/09/2014 10:45

Mine came from our local dog warden. She was found locked in a park in February in the snow. They did a home check and we had to sign a contract that she would be vaccinated, speyed and taken to training classes. We also have to hand her back to them if for any reason we can't keep her. They came back after a week to check on us then again at 6 months and we got a phone call at a year.

R4roger · 13/09/2014 10:46

oh and mum and dad been bred from a few times but this would be her last litter because one died - not sure how many survived.

tbf some of the posters in this section are somewhat dogmatic. Grin there are other advice places to go to, if you actually need advice!

A private dogs home I only went with DC to get them out of the house went with another friend that was looking for a dog we all fell in love with dafty dog best 30£ I spent ever had her now for 8 years I love her to bits Smile

MehsMum · 13/09/2014 10:47

I will get flamed for admitting this.
When we wanted to get a dog, we contacted a couple of rescues. One actually laughed at me down the phone: 'You want a dog! But you have children! We don't rehome dogs with anyone with children under TEN' (I kid you not).

So we bought (nominal price) a Heinz 57 puppy from a friend of a friend, who had a bred a litter on purpose (she wanted to replace one of her own dogs). And that dog's been a great family pet.

Come the time we wanted another dog, I asked the vet about pure-breds, and whether I was right in thinking that they were generally prone to various diseases, what with being a bit inbred. And he said yes. Since then, in fact, one of the breeds we considered has started to have individual dogs with a truly horrible auto-immune complaint which seems to have a genetic component.

We were therefore back to looking for a cross-bred or mutt, and we tracked down a purpose-bred litter. If I'd known then what I know now about training working-line dogs, I'd have worked harder and better with him much earlier in his life, but he's shaping up nicely now.

So, yeah, two puppies from what some people on this forum will call backyard breeders.

I'll come back in an hour, once I have donned my flame-proof suit.

Pre-loved pets.

We wanted two dogs together that got on with other animals.
Once we'd seen them we couldn't not take them - I though there was something not quite right, the womans daughter was not in the least bit bothered they were going.
They were in a two bed house with three dogs, a cat that had kittens plus ducks and chickens in the back garden which had dog poo everywhere.

Mine have all been rescue collies, even as a child we had rescue collies. My latest one was from wiccaweys, rescued from an Irish pound. She's beautiful and smart

....the male was 18 month old, wouldn't walk properly on a lead, looked ribby and needed an op to turn his eyelashes out and hadn't had any injections.

...the female was 2 1/2 and our vet said she looked like she'd had 2 or 3 litters of pups and her injections were out of date.

Four years later, they are in perfect health, well trained and a joy to live with.

Owllady · 13/09/2014 10:53

Hmm can see my phone numbers? I may have delete that Confused

Owllady · 13/09/2014 10:55

Henna, did you watch Paul o'Grady this week? There was a little dog on that kept going lame on his back legs. Saw the vet, turns out he didn't know how to walk as he had been carried everywhere Hmm

wantacatplease · 13/09/2014 10:56

I can't on a PC, Owllady but you might want someone on the mobile site to check who can more easily zoom in on photos.

wantacatplease · 13/09/2014 10:57

By the way, gorgeous dog!

mrssmith79 · 13/09/2014 10:59

Council pound. The warden had picked her up, she'd been found tied to a public bench outside a block of flats - been there a couple of days apparently.
When we went to the kennels we initially (sadly) dismissed her as she had a Reserved notice next to her kennel. We mentioned it to one of the staff and she told us that she was on her way to remove the sign as the people who'd reserved her hadn't turned up to collect her the day before.
Took her home about 20 minutes later Grin and that was almost 6 years ago.

Seriouslyffs · 13/09/2014 11:00

Owl she's a very beautiful dog. Smile
Ours is from Battersea. Us and two other school friend families started the process and we were the only ones to stay the course. I'm ridiculously proud of this!
She's now 8 and sleeping on dh's pillow next to me. Blush

Got dalmation puppies from a rescue centre two years ago. Unlike MehsMum they just did a background check and we signed a few forms. DC were 7, 5 and DTs were 2. Lovely dogs, a bit stupid but great with kids. DD names one Pebbles (like from 101 Dalmatians) and DS named the girl Hera.

FlossyMoo · 13/09/2014 11:07

I rescued both of mine from idiot owners.

bryte · 13/09/2014 11:10

A person who rescues lurchers - found through Lurcher Link. She was 3 when we got her. With hindsight it was a bit dodgy not going through a more reputable rescue. I was always going to get a rescue dog but have to admit I am envious of friends and family who got a puppy from whoever would give/sell them one. I feel my dog is viewed more suspiciously by people because we don't know her complete history. I have to be more wary of strangers and my children's friends around my dog because the rescue person's assessment of the dog wasn't very thorough. She's lovely though, in so many ways, and she's definitely in her forever home.

R4roger · 13/09/2014 11:13

I am too nervous to get a rescue without knowing the history, preferred a puppy. oth since found out that the rescue neuters and microchips which is a big bonus.

our previous dog you could say was a rescue. a friend got her as a puppy for his GF who didnt want her, so we got her! at 14 or so weeks.

From a breeder.

A breeder who shows their dogs, runs the breed rescue for the region, talked to me for 40 minutes on the phone and then an hour in person (because they wanted to meet us and check us out, even thought involved a 2 hour drive for us.) They also let us meet all their dogs. The dogs were checking us out. This was before any pups were born.

LottieMumofWilfJenkins · 13/09/2014 11:17

Tyler(greyhound)and Bumbledog(Jackabee) both came from Jerry Green Dog Rescue three years apart. Tdog is my Mum's. Mum lives with me now and thankfully Bdog and Tdog get on very well!!!

A very well researched breeder. I wanted to see parents temperament (and health) with a baby in the house. Our dog was far too well bred for us if you are into that sort of thing - Dad had won best dog in his category at the Westminster show in the US - we just wanted a lovely healthy family dog.

We have the kindest dog in the world and I don't think we will ever have another dog as special as her in temperament/personality terms.

Incidentally - I didn't hesitate to have her spayed despite her breeding - dog breeding is for dog breeders imo.
