What breed of small/medium sized dog?

Hi
We've been deliberating about getting a dog for ages now. I'd love one (grew up with dogs) and the kids would do anything for one.
We're currently looking after a Labrador and a Cockerlier for a week which is just convincing me more that it is a good idea.
Both dogs are great, but I find the Lab too big and strong when we are out walking.
The Cockerlier is a much more practical size - I can lift her over stiles / in to the car if needed and she isn't so strong. I'm not sure if you'd say she was small or medium sized.
Ideally we'd like a dog that is happy with walking for 1 hour some days, but could manage a long hike too.
Any suggestions of breeds that would fit would be much appreciated.
We'd go for a rescue dog in any case if possible, but this would help with knowing what to look out for.
Thanks!

Westie
Staffie
Cocker spaniel
Schnauzer
Any breed of spaniel
Terrier
Samoyed

One of my dogs is a rescue and she's a delight, our rescue picked the dog they thought would be the best match for the family, good luck

Our whippet arrived today - and what a lovely gentle sweet little thing he is. No puppy madness, walked nicely on his lead - just perfect really!

Border terrier! Border terrier! Border terrier!
Best dogs ever. Perfect temperament, hardy little buggers and cute as anything. Love them.

Ooo thank you!
I have now discovered the people down the road have a Schnauzer (wasn't sure what it was until I googled from your suggestions).
Spaniels are a favourite of my DD.

Scottie dog, always overlooked for the westie but the Scott is a hardy little dog, very loyal, love A good long walk and from my experience aren't yappy.
Also, they don't moult.

We have just picked up our working cocker spaniel puppy, she would meet all your requirements. They have such a lovely temperament and she is being lovely with our toddler.
