New greyhound ran into a wall, DH taken him to the vet - I'm across the sea :-(

We got a lovely new (3 year old) greyhound on Saturday to keep our spoilt little princess mutton hound company.

He's a lovely boy, but very excitable. I'm away on business, so DH is managing them both. Tonight DH sent me a message to say he was just off to the vets because new hound had run into the garden wall.

DH is not one to panic unnecessarily, and has rushed to the out of hours vet, I'm so worried for our lovely lad.

Some hounds can be very dramatic. I almost took one of my fosters to the emergency vet with suspected heart attack, one night. Turns out she was just over excited that we were eating chinese food in the same room as her

I genuinely thought she was dying and I've owned dogs all of my life

Then there was the one who did get taken to the vet with suspected broken leg. The vet could absolutely nothing at all wrong with him. Not a single thing, not even any swelling. It was three hours before he stopped whimpering and limping

I hope it's nothing for your boy too. Fingers and paws crossed here for you.

I had two greyhounds from Hersham it is great that the greyhound rescues all seem to let you have them for home trial it really makes a difference I think. Keep us posted.

Poor boy needs stitches tomorrow, under anaesthetic. Bit worried because he's officially on trial with us (although we weren't planning on letting him go), DH is calling the rescue place to confirm we're okay to take him for an operation.

He's not insured yet

Greyhounds have terribly fragile skin, the rescue will understand.

Thanks, they're lovely people at the rescue so I'm sure it'll be okay. We should have guessed, he's got terrible scars on his flanks from the traps, maybe just very thin skinned.

Ahh I'm so sorry to hear this, you must be very upset. The vets will take good care of him though :) if you don't mind my asking, how up north are you and which rescue is he from?

All greyhounds have thin skin, when my boy started a fight with a staffy and lost with a bite to his leg he had a, well, not exactly a gash, more like his skin had ripped/split. The vet told me that greyhounds and whippets have skin that rips like paper!

Yes, Whippy's leg looked like it had ripped when she hurt it. There was no/little blood but the skin has just torn open, leaving muscle exposed underneath. T'was not nice, but no-where as bad as it looked once stitched up.

He's from Wortley, near Sheffield. It's a brilliant kennels, the dogs are really well cared for, and we've broken one

Oh no, your poor new boy :-( I was only on your thread the other day I think when you said you were getting a second.

He'll be fine though and whatever he goes through in the next few days it'll be worth it for a new forever life with you and DH and princess hound. Far better than a life racing and whatever else may have happened to him after.

I agree that they are so dramatic though. We've had a few little scrapes on our girl and she makes a proper fuss. Bravery not their strong point!

Oh no, I hope he is OK. Don't beat yourself up though, these things happen easily and if he is very exciteable then it's easily done. I bet he will be just fine .

They are such drama queens though, mine spent an hour limping yesterday after catching his leg so slightly on the table. He kept forgetting which leg to limp with though

Yy D0in that sounds exactly like what Sprocket's leg was like. Virtually no blood but the skin had torn open. either side of his leg. He had 12 stitches and a drain put in. The drain was just weird though, it looked exactly like a cigarette butt sticking out of his leg

Ahh my boy is from the Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust, they are a great rescue (although they prefer 'Rehoming Organisation' as they get their dogs straight from the track they're not considered rescued. Just retired). I've not heard anything about Wortley before but I'm sure they're great. It's generally a good sign if the dogs are well cared for :)

Oh don't feel bad...my brother's greyhound ran into a barbed wire fence last week! They're SO like that. She's scarred her nose terribly but doesn't care! I'm just glad it missed her eye! I'm sure your little fella will be ok.x

I think you may have just discovered that the boys are a bit dim!

I can't tell you the amount of stuff ours have run into- they can't run and think and the brakes are rubbish.

The rule of thumb is also that the more they scream the less they are dying!!

Well he's back at the vets this morning having stitches, which requires a general anaesthetic.

DH have contacted the rehousing centre and they've been wonderful, even offering to stump up £100 of the £400 vets fee, (but we won't take them up on that, they need all the funds they have for the dogs they're currently looking after).

I hate the thought of him having a GA, can't wait to get home tonight.

Hope it goes well today. Greys and lurchers have notoriously thin skin and a low pain/diva threshold! Ours has come running up to us screaming with what we thought had to be a broken leg on two occasions - the first time he had a little white paper lolly stick stuck to the side of his paw and the second time he had a wet leaf stuck to his pad.

Aw, poor lad.

Pip is exactly the same - all speed and no brakes, he's been a the vets for repair jobs more times in his 12 months than any of my other dogs have been in 12 years - and I've learned to patch up the smaller ones myself!

He manage to tear a hole in his side playing in the garden with Lurcherboy a month or so ago. Very similar, big gaping wound with hardly any blood loss, but gruesome to look at. He was stapled back together at an emergency appointment and you can barely see where it was now. What worried me most that time was that he didn't scream the place down - whereas for other less serious wounds you'd have thought he'd broken a leg - gawd knows what the neighbours think.

Let us know how he gets on and please don't beat yourself up about it - my vet says it's ridiculously common with Greyhounds and Lurchers, as they are all about the speed, have no brakes and ridiculously thin skin.

He's round from the anaesthetic and DH is picking him up in an hour. I won't be home until midnight, but he'll be having loads of cuddles then.

He's home and doing great, I seem to embarrassed DH by face timing him in the vets and demanding to see the dog

No cone of shame either, he's enjoying a fuss from the kids and we'll take him and get the paperwork sorted out tomorrow.
