The doghouse

Just for a change, bad news about my dog...

I've posted about my dog before, but I'll give a brief rundown. He's a Rottweiller and he'll be 2 next month.

He developed elbow dysplasia at 4 months old, had surgery at 6 months, he was a great candidate for it to be really successful, but it wasn't (it was improved but still had issues) and he was about 9 months old before I could walk him again, he was left with a bit of stiffness and was on permanent metacam.

After I could walk him again he was a bit OTT with other dogs, not that surprising as he'd missed a big chunk of socialization. He'd been to puppy classes and was attending obedience classes, but he wasn't really improving, so I signed him up for classes with a behaviourist just after he turned 1.

3 weeks in he suddenly and unexpectedly reacted aggressively to the behaviourist. After check ups and referrals it seemed to be spinal pain, nothing shows up on x-rays but various vets have narrowed it down to the same spot on his back. It took quite a long time to hit on the right combination of pain relief and in the meantime he got worse, reactive to dogs, strangers, cars and bikes.

He's muzzled and on lead always (outside) we've had to build him a kennel and run to have visitors in, but, he finally started making progress about 8 weeks ago as we got the painkillers right...he was still having seemingly random bad days which we were about to investigate food for as he also has some food intolerances, but, we had made tiny forward steps with training now that the pain was under control.

So this weekend...

He was admitted to the vet school with sickness and lethargy, they found a perforated ulcer from the Metacam and they had to remove a portion of his stomach and intestine, there's a fairly high risk of complications because of where the ulcer was, if it goes wrong any further surgeries would compromise his quality of life... they gave us odds slightly higher than 50/50 of him pulling through.

He's been stable for the last two days, but isn't eating yet, which is starting to be a bit concerning, though not too worrying yet and they're reducing his morphine today to try and see if he perks up enough to eat.

Just thought I'd post because I have posted about him before and it gives me something to do other than wait for tomorrow's update from the vet or worse an emergency call because something's gone wrong.

Gosh, sorry to hear that you've had so many issues to deal with with him - I hope you get some good news from the vets.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this. I remember your threads about him - so impressed at all the lengths you go to for him. Fingers crossed for you he recovers.

Those NSAIDs are a bugger aren't they.

I'm actually kicking myself about the metacam as we had been talking about taking him off it, but were waiting to see if the other painkillers were working first.

He's been loads of work and hassle, but, he is a sweetheart at home with us and he's so young, so we were just trying to give him a bit of a shot at a normal doggy life...and it almost seemed within reach.

So I've spent the last couple of days just waiting about hoping he does get better.

I'm sorry, poor dog. I really hope he is better soon.

My collie has lots of joint issues and would be on long term NSAIDs too if they hadn't made him really ill. (First dose and he pood blood for 2 whole weeks)

So sorry you're going through this tabulah. He (and you) just can't seem to catch a break.

Report
tabulahrasa · 10/06/2014 15:28

He has got the worst luck...he shouldn't have got ED, his parents have good elbows, his elbow surgery should really have had a better outcome statistically, we've never really worked out what his back is about or why it's sore. Most dogs tolerate NSAIDs for longer than he's been on them and the ulcer was in the worst place to operate on, they were hoping to just have to take out a little bit of intestine.

Oh and not to forget he's had a couple of ear infections, he chewed himself a hotspot in his leg, his recovery from being neutered wasn't straightforward, he ended up with massive swelling for just over a week...oh and he's got a scar on his ear from one of the many times he's been attacked while on lead.

I swear he's just faulty, lol.

Have you tried turmeric, glucosamine and Diatomaceous earth?
One of my friends' dogs has joint problems and the above helped.

Oh poor you and poor dog - fingers crossed he pulls through ok

Report
tabulahrasa · 10/06/2014 15:38

He's on a few joint supplements - I haven't changed them because we were looking into food as a trigger for behaviour, I was considering adding turmeric in, but as he struggles to tolerate some fairly normal dog food ingredients I hadn't really looked into it yet.

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear this tabulahrasa. You have worked so hard with him and he's so lucky to have such a dedicated family.

I'll be keeping everything crossed for him to make a good recovery from this and get back making progress with his behavioural stuff really soon.

There's nothing I can do other than wait to see if he gets better really, they're going to talk to me tomorrow about whether I can go and see him, I'm hoping I can leave him something that smells like home to see if that does him any good.

It just seems so unfair that he gets everything, if he does get better and keeps up with this luck we'll at some point have to go, right he's been through enough, but he's only a baby really.

My insurance only went up by a couple of pounds last year - I've been told it doesn't work like car or house insurance where it goes up if you claim, thankfully, lol

It is so unfair and it must be horrible to think of him alone as scared. I'm sure the vets are taking extra good care of him and he's as happy as possible away from you xx

Well I had to really stress his behavioural issues, just to be on the safe side, so I worry that they're keeping out of his way so as not to stress him :(

Hopefully by now they'll have worked out that he's really sociable, as long as his back isn't sore.

I mean he's on morphine and stuff so he's probably none the wiser, but I'm hoping he's not feeling all abandoned.

Hopefully he's on enough morphing that if he is feeling abandoned, he doesn't care about it Wink

I'm sure he's fine and will be really excited to see you. Grin

tabulah :(

Please don't beat yourself up about giving him Metacam. It's likely to be the most widely used NSAID (probably the most widely used veterinary drug) in the UK. As you know many dogs rely on it for comfort and pain relief every day of their lives and are fine. You were giving it to him so he could be free from pain, and he has been one of the very unlucky few which has severe complications. Not your fault, really

I am sure he will be getting just the right amount of attention. Vets and nurses are experienced with dealing with tricky characters - even the most placid dog can become anxious or fearful in a strange environment so they are all treated with diplomacy and care. For some dogs less interaction is better, and others need more human contact - nurses are usually really good at working out which dogs fall into which category, and meeting their needs as individuals.

So sorry for you and for him that you are going through this on top of everything else, but hang tight. Hopefully he is brighter and eating a bit tomorrow x

I know the Metacam should have been fine, it's just that with hindsight I wish we had moved him off it sooner obviously, but at the time there was no rush to do it.

I know they're great in there (he's at the dick vet)and I'm sure they're looking after him, logically, lol...but he's my puppy.

Hmmm just sent a post but it has disappeared so this might come twice.

I know it doesn't make it any easier that he's in the best place because he's still apart from you :(

Who is dealing with him?

Report
tabulahrasa · 10/06/2014 23:22

Blush a very nice woman who phoned me every day and I should know her name...but I've only spoken to her on the phone.

He was admitted at 11 o'clock at night, so the vet who admitted him isn't the one looking after him now.

My cat has been a patient there though, so I've seen how well they look after them, it is just that I'd rather sit with him, lol.
