Great Dane - Alabama Rot <Upsetting>

My dear Great Dane, who I have had for only a short time has to be PTS today, renal failure due to suspected Alabama Rot. He was never walked in any area known to be high risk.

I still feel it is my fault, if only I walked him somewhere else if only the dog walker walked him somewhere different, if only, if only

He is so sweet and so gentle, I brought him home from the vets and the vet is coming at 10:30 I wanted him to be chilling on the sofa when it happens.

How do people cope when an 20 month pup who has only been in my life since February causes me this much pain, how do they cope when their beloved dog has been with them for so much longer.

I am so so sorry and my heart goes out to you. There is absolutely nothing you could have done to prevent this - the medical profession are not sure of how the dogs get it.

It is a huge sad tragic situation and you must not in any way take the blame.

Dogs can be walked together in the same place and some get it and others don't - I know that will not help you but do not dwell on the if onlys.

He has had a way to short life but he has been loved cherished and given everything he needs.

I'd never heard of Alabama Rot until this year, but it seems to be so prevalent. Nasty disease with no signs to look out for.

Please don't blame yourself. Better he had a short life filled with walks and fun and love than a long one with no enjoyment.

So sorry. There is NOTHING you could have done ... horrid horrid thing, that's so sad, particularly with one so young. It is hard to cope afterwards ... time does heal ... but you never forget. Glad he had you in his life to care for him. x

Please don't blame yourself, there's nothing you could have done, it's dreadful, totally unpredictable illness and as nutty said, dogs walked together or in the same area on the same day as dogs that have contracted it have remained unaffected. It's just one of those tragic medical mysteries.

Your love for him comes through clearly in your post. He was a lucky boy to have had you in his life and have known what it is to be truly loved and cared for.
