This little guy is coming to live with us in 4 weeks time! Just wanted to share as I'm so excited. Our old boy was PTS in Jan and life just hasn't been right with no dog in the house. However, I'm nervous as I haven't had a puppy for so long. Tell me it's going to be OK! Smile

How exciting! Can I join in too? We get our 8 week old springer spaniel on Easter weekend and can't wait. Have been reading up on the puppy threads and getting prepared. We lost our springer boy last summer and like you said the house just isn't the same. Can we have a countdown to puppy day? Grin

Hi Rainbow,

A countdown to puppy day sounds good. Our pup is 8 weeks on 21st April so we might get them on the same day. Smile

Do you have a name for puppy yet? Ours is going to be called Wilfred (chosen by 3yo DD). She was looking at pictures of him this morning saying "I love you Wilfred. I hope you can come and live with us soon." So sweet.

Can I join too please. We get our little girl in mid April. A friend for our precious boy.

Yes, all are welcome. We get Mille on Good Friday, she'll be 8 weeks and 3 days. We've bought her a bed already and can't wait to go shopping for toys and bits.

Awww he is cute! What flavour is he?

Report
RatHammock · 27/03/2014 20:06

He's a whippet, Owllady. Not that he looks much like one yet. They're quite fat and squashy as puppies! We're going to visit him next weekend. His breeder is in Norfolk and we're in London so it's a bit of a trek.

What sort of puppy are you getting, demons?

Ohhh I thought he was a whippet
And the whippet we know is called wilf :)
So well behaved, docile!

Report
RatHammock · 27/03/2014 20:22

Oh that's funny. Smile. I have no idea how DD came up with that name. We don't know anybody called Wilfred! Still her other suggestion was Hamonade Confused so Wilf is quite sensible really.

I hope he will be well behaved (after the initial puppy madness, obv). Our last whippet was so good, albeit not terribly bright, but I can't quite remember training him!

We are getting a black lab bitch.

Isthatwhatdemonsdo · 27/03/2014 22:55

I mean the gender of the dog not calling anyone a bitch, as I'd said a girl on my first post.

Looks like we'll all have lots of little Easter pups running around! Any words of wisdom for the early days of puppy owning from the more experienced puppy mummies would me much appreciated.
I've been looking at a few books in the library but not really sure which ones are good and which aren't. Although I'll definitely be staying clear of the Cesar Milan ones after the other thread on here.

Ha @ Rat. I've got The Perfect Puppy book by I think it's Gwen Bailey. Excellent book. Will be seeking it out again before new pup arrives.

I had that book too. I remember it being very good. Unfortunately our last dog chewed it when he was a puppy Grin so I'll have to get another copy.

I'm getting our new pup around the 9th of April - he's an as-yet-nameless Springer/Cocker cross. I'm beyond excited grin

I've got Gwen Bailey's The Perfect Puppy book too, recommended by a friend.

We got our 8 week old cocker spaniel on sundaySmile first time puppy owners so novices at this! dd was so excited on Sunday but the novelty is quickly wearing off! We're all just getting used to the new member of our family as she is getting used to us too. Like having a newborn baby around againShock

She's beautiful Rainbow. Smile

How old is your DD Lowis? Ours is 3 and so looking forward to the puppy arriving. I hope they're going to be great friends.

Thanks Rat, we have a 9 year old and 2 year old so add a new puppy in and life will be fun. We'll need to lay down the ground rules early on I think.
I wondered how everyone's planning and shopping for their new puppies was going. We have a bed, collar and lead, toys and bowls so far. So still need to get some kind of crate for the car and a few cheap blankets and towels plus a grooming comb.
I've been researching pet insurance and puppy food. I know the pup will eat whatever the breeder gave for the first few days but I'm looking at options for after that, ideally something decent quality but that doesn't break the bank.
What are all your plans/ recommendations for puppy bits?

this is our chap, taken 2 week ago when I took the dcs to meet him. He should be with us next week.

MissRainbow I've got pretty much the same as you so far although also have a crate for him indoors. I've bought a bag of the food the breeder is currently using (Pro Plan Puppy). I've had a quick look at insurance and will sort that out next week when I've got his microchip number.

I've also got 4 cats and 3 dcs (7yo and 5 yo twins) so I'm expecting life to be interesting for a while!
