The doghouse

Any vets about? My dog is making funny noises.

My 9month vizsla has been out for a long walk this lunchtime ,
About half way round he started making noises that I thought sounded a bit piggy like!

I then thought maybe he needs to be sick. But his sides weren't going in like he is retching.

Now we are back home, he is making a lot of noise every 30 seconds or so when breathing, like his nose is blocked and there isn't enough air getting into his lungs.

There are no other symptoms showing.

Not had a dog with a cold before so I'm not sure that's what it is.

Has he snorted something up his nose? My spaniel regularly inhales small bugs/grass seeds etc. He eventually fires them out.

Maybe. Will wait with anticipation for something to appear.

Is his face swollen? Did he drink any waterfrom a pond or puddle?

See if you can look in his mouth and at his nose. Check his colour to. Press the gums, it should take no more than two seconds for the colour to return.

This sounds like a reverse sneeze, we used to get it a lot when the dogs got water up there nose when being bathed. Pretty harmless, the noise comes from the soft pallette vibrating as they tried to suck the water back down their throats, used to go on for a while then just stop!

Did he drink from a puddle when running, you know like drank too quickly?

Reverse sneeze also occurs when soft palate gets hooked over epiglottis (not life threatening). Offering him tiny bits to eat can help.

I've been out for a while at the dentist.
Just got in and fed the dog, no problems, will have a listen to see if it continues. ATM it sounds like every thing is ok.

Thanks for all the replies.
It's stopped now. So I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I also think it sounds like reverse sneezing. Best remedy is to place your finger over both nostrils cutting air for a few seconds. Sounds awful bur it sorts out the soft palate and they soon learn how to fix it themselves after this, so you will only have to do it a few times.

Thanks binger, will try that next time.
