My beautiful rescue boy came from Ireland. He is truly amazing. I have had dogs for 25 years and he is the most trainable, amenable and eager to please one I have ever had. He is a joy to own. I can't bear to think that if this legislation gets through others like him will be put to sleep without having a chance
Another one signed. Also know a lot of people who have rescues from Ireland. If this goes ahead I imagine it'll pretty much put paid to the work of all the dedicated people who bring all these dogs over here. The money just won't be there.
It's not new legislation - it's simply to do with the enforcement of existing rules. At the moment, I'm unclear about whether it is actually being enforced "on the ground" in ROI or whether it is simply being discussed?
In any case, when MT bring over vanloads of dogs for resale from ROI it's arguable that they should be using a different process anyway see here since they are not importing pets for personal use but are importing large numbers of dogs for resale. The same rules should be being applied to Irish puppy farm pups - so if it can help stamp out that trade I see it as a good thing.
The thing is it won't stop the puppy farmers as they will will just move north of the border from where they have free access to the rest of the UK. There are no border controls between north and south. Yes, the legislation has always been in place but now the rescues believe it will be enforced and the potential fines are too much for them to risk.
