Short haired dog similar size to cocker spaniel

We are thinking about getting a new puppy. We currently have two springers - one 10 and one 4 - and want to downsize a bit with a new dog. I love spaniels but really want a short haired dog. Any ideas?

Jack russell? Not my cup of tea exactly though. Cavalier and keep it clipped?

Too small - cocker spaniel seems like a decent size to me. Plus I don't really like terrier types.

Border terrier? They tend to have a more family-friendly and other-dog-friendly personality than a lot of jack russells.

How about one of these?

Any ideas that aren't terriers? May just have to go with a cocker and live with another water loving(smelly) long haired dog.

Field spaniel, Tibetan spaniel, poodle, Spanish water go, Portuguese Water Dog, all the Petit bassets, Sussex spaniel and Clumber Spaniel. There are also whole host of other Eastern European water dogs too just can't remember heir names.

That moved the goal posts a bit though didn't it - so, you don't really want another gun dog then either despite the op, if you don't ideally want to put up with er gundog traits.

Have you looked here? there are also full breed listings to read through with a breed summary. This might be more useful than asking folk to guess. There are so many breeds that fit 'cocker size but short haired'. You either don't know or haven't said things that will help narrow it down, it will be a long and painful thread if we have to guess by eliminating every other breed.
If you have a handful to compare or want to garner opinion on a specific breed, once you've had a look you'll get loads of help.

Entelbucher.......

mrslaughan · 22/09/2013 18:46

Sorry should read Entlebucher (Mountian dog) - but they are a small one, about the same size as a cocker

ancientbuchanan · 22/09/2013 18:52

Mediterranean pointer, Italian greyhound or small whippet, schnauzer, medium poodle, French bulldog.

I know you have said not jrt and so would I pre October last year. Ours barks at foxes but not cats nor, generally, other dogs, is extraordinarily affectionate, and wire haired so moults less. Lot of dog in smallish size. Just saying....

ancientbuchanan · 22/09/2013 18:54

Beagle, basset, dachshund?

mistlethrush · 22/09/2013 18:54

Whippet or small lurcher.

ChoudeBruxelles · 22/09/2013 19:15

Don't mind if it's a gun dog - just would prefer a short haired. Our springers come home smelly, wet with half a field trapped in their coats.

We have two cats as well so am not keen on lurchers etc as they may have more of a tendency to chase.

Beagle looking like a good option maybe

Cocker Spaniel and clip them??

mistlethrush · 22/09/2013 19:30

Quite a few people have cat friendly lurchers. If you got from a puppy, wouldn't be an issue surely?

digerd · 22/09/2013 20:09

Beagle is the only one I can think of that is truly short and smooth haired. Neighbour has one, but can't let it off the lead. But there are others on our dog walk fields and they are both off the lead.
My neighbour got his from a rescue centre and was already an adult.
All he has to do is towel clean his hairyless paws after a walk.

How about Magic?
