I could probably ask Mr Google, but you lot are far more helpful! Any idea how long it takes to get a doggy passport??

Thanks!

Really? Our vet had a drawer full of them and we got it there and then.

Either way - not too long! Thanks for that. I've had a look on t'internet too, and must just make sure he has a rabies jab 3 weeks before we travel. To be honest, I'm not even sure we'll take him with us yet. South of France - very hot in summer and I worry about him burning his little paws on the concrete! Flat is cool, though - and if we have to be away for a month - which we might - he'd undoubtedly rather be with us than with the dog walker, who he loves but not as much as he loves me! And a month would be jolly expensive, too ...

Thank you, both.

smartarse we took ours to the South of France last year (and we were camping!)
It's fair to say that GingerDog is a great sun worshipper anyway but he was quite happy to mooch between the sun and shade as necessary.
TBH we resolved last year that aside from city breaks we would not go to Europe again without the dogs as it was so cheap and easy to take them, as well as enjoyable for the whole family :)

Can I just ask, if I wanted to take our dog to Spain on holiday, do I just need to get a Doggy passport? And do the relevant jabs?

I'm sure I read somewhere that they have to go in quarantine or something! I was probably reading the wrong thing.

To be honest, we'd all enjoy ourselves much more with him! I need to find out what the rules are on the beaches down there.

The requirements are rabies injection not less than three weeks prior to travel and a passport issued to enter another EU country. On re-entry to UK the dog must have a tapeworm treatment administered by a vet not less than 24 hours and not more than 105 hours prior to re-entry.
You should talk to your vet about other diseases that your dog maybe at risk of catching as a result of travel and how you can protect against them.

Forgot to add you are also subject to transport of animals act so you need to make a journey plan stopping every 2 hours for rest and watering. Then big stop every 8 hours.

Thanks, Lonecat - that's really helpful. So I'd need to find in France for the return journey. That should be do-able.

When I needed the vet I simply went in, smiled and thrust the passport at them. They smiled, did their bit and thrust the passport and bill back at me. It was very quick and even with my rudimentary French quite painless :o
Quick note though, on all car ferries the dog must stay either in your car or on longer crossings, in the on board kennels. Because of this we opted for the tunnel despite DHs dislike of them. GingerDog stayed with us in the car (he was not allowed out) and once the initial "oh my goodness what's happening" trauma at loading was over he slept through the crossing. We would always use the tunnel when taking the dogs rather than risk leaving them to get stressed on the car deck.
