Will insurance pay for heart medication?

I've never claimed before. Dog is at the vet for a dental under GA and they've rung to say the dog has a heart murmur and they think she'll have to start on medication. I point out to the locum vet that the dog's had a murmur for nearly 2 years and noone's ever said anything about medication before (he thought he'd just diagnosed it and I didn't know).

Anyway will talk to him more when I pick her up, but if the murmurs got worse and now needs medicine what happens? My excess is £70 so if the tablets are less than £70 a month will they not pay? Or do I pay £70 and then they pay the rest?

What happens in Oct when her insurance is up for renewal? Will Tesco think they don't want to insure her anymore so treble the quote to make it financially unviable? I'm guessing that noone else will insure her now. So I won't be able to shop around.

Ours does, with direct line - it's cheap though - think 20 quid a month - Fortikor or something.

The excess is usually per condition per year, so you pay the first £70 then they pay it for the rest of the year.

When it comes to renewal time, it depends what kind of policy you have, it it only pays for a year then that condition is no longer covered if it's lifetime cover then it still would be.

Premiums shouldn't go up because you've claimed and you could still get her insured by other companies... But anything that's been previously claimed for will not be covered.

Also be very careful before cancelling any policy as many companies will not take on a dog over a certain age. PetPlan certainly have a list of "selected breeds" where cover cannot be taken out from a surprisingly young age.

I'm going to be terrified of having to put any pet through an operation again. Was just thinking if we do get another dog I don't know how ill manage o get it neutered.

Goodness, I can only begin to imagine.

You might want to talk this through with your vet, when you feel ready. I think it is helpful to review events like this once the initial shock has faded a little.
