Clever Dog - Happy Post

The recent snow has not been good for my epilepsy. This has led to Colliedog demonstrating just how tuned in he really is. This morning, as an example, DH had gotten up and left me to sleep in for half an hour, as I was unwell yesterday. DH then forgot all about waking me in time for my medication (alarm clocks are useless as I sleep throught them). Colliedog came upstairs, let himself into the bedroom, pulled back the quilt and woke me up by licking my face. Then he went further: he wriggled under my arm, curled round my back and shoved me up into a sitting position! From there, he kept pawing my shoulder and licking my face until I got up, whereupon he accompanied me to the bathroom, and watched me take my medication. Then he just trotted back downstairs and started playing with his toy again!

He also senses when I am about to have a seizure, and alerts me and anyone else present to this by running to and from me and other people, whining and trying to make me get up and walk about if I am sitting down. And here is the thing: no one has ever trained him to do any of this: he is totally self taught and more reliable than DH

Does anyone else have a dog with a self appointed job?

Not anywhere near as impressive, but I taught pup to ring a buzzer to be let out. Older dog is a bit scared of it so pup started to buzz it for her when she was hanging around the back door.

All these clever dogs! We've had our pup 6 days and he can sit, stay and lay down on command. Not in the same league as yours but I'm quite proud of him!

Unfortunately my clever Ddog1 has turned to the darkside and has taught herself to open zips, tupperware etc. all in pursuit of ill gotten edible gains!

So actually nothing like as smart or useful as your lovely dog! [bugrin]

How lovely, what a very clever boy he is! Gymdog isn't overly blessed with brainpower, but he is definitely self-appointed kitchen waste disposer, child cuddler and foot warmer

In contrast Ditzylab's job is apparently barking at the cooker when it is on. I suspect she is afraid of my terrible food preparation skills I blame the smoke alarm. Not the fact that I keep burning food and microwaves oh no...

Your dog sounds like Lassie...or the Littlest Hobo (my dream dog). Lucky You!

I am the mother of a gifted dog also . She has developed a mechanism for alerting me to impending mealtimes by picking up and dropping her tin bowl on the tile floor. Do you think she needs additional intellectual stimulation? [buwink]

My dog is fully obedience trained and pretty smart but one trick I definitely didn't teach him is to come and sit and stare morosely at me until I get up and let him out for a wee.

Or come and hover and stare at me when I'm in the kitchen cooking dinner, dropping hints about feeding him.

Actually come to think of it it's only me that gets these hints, never dh. [buhmm]
