First night with new pup

(38 Posts)

Currently fast asleep in his crate. I am sleeping downstairs in case he wakes needing to go out. Fingers crossed i get a few uninterrupted hours. Night.

All quiet except noisy kitchen clock. In fact so quiet I am worried about him - gulp. Trying to hear him breathing.

Mine cried the place down so i put him in with me. 6 months later.... he's still here and has his own pillow. I love waking up to a dogs anus in my face every morning.
Stay strong OP!

What sort of pup? <excited!!!>

Ooh that was me 3 weeks ago hope it went ok ( hate to say this but someone has to breeder warned me night 2 would be worse and it was) but 3 weeks on and were doing ok

sounds positive. dog 1 slept all the way through from day 1 so it can happen.

Ha, woke up just after 1am and went outside for a newspaper wee, very impressed. Not too keen to settle back down even though I kept calm and quiet. Finally went to sleep under the covers with me, snoring in my ear. Needless to say I couldnt sleep, the attempt to tuck him back in his crate was fruitless. Thankfully around 2am my DS came in and managed to get him asleep in his igloo. Stayed asleep until 6 am. Has now done two poos already and its not even 8.30 yet! We are exhausted parents.

Will try and sort out photos. He is a miniature, black and tan, smooth dachhund who can walk straight through the bars of his playpen. Oops.

Even dachshund - sorry the sleep deprivation is getting to me.

Now he is back to sleep on my lap under the duvet. A very happy boy.

Ha ha, you'll be taking turns to have naps today! I remember now it was a mini dachshund from your other thread. He must be teeny tiny smile

We brought home our tiny Russian toy terrier a few weeks ago, she was so small and cute I felt mean to expect her to be downstairs in astrange environment! First few nights she slept curled up with me under my blankets, I realised she loves being cosy so I made her a fleece sleeping bag. Next few nights she slept in her crate by my bed in her sleeping bag! And then I put her in the kitchen. It just seemed gentler that way and she never cried.

Just logged on to see how you were getting on! How have the first few days been? Do post pics! Would love to see how they are growing. Made me giggle that he can walk through his playpen bars, hahaha! I was wondering about that as we picked our old one up yesterday, it is mesh apart from the door.

PS I can't seem to work out how to direct message you but we live in Hertford, not too far away we must meet up with them sometime! I will email the breeder and let her know it is fine to give you my telephone number and email address. We pick up ours on 29th March so a little way away but will be keeping an eye out for your news! smile

Insickness, you are only 30 mins from me, that will be brilliant. My Mum lives in Warwick Close - small world! I have spoken to LB about it, she said she tried to call you the other day but couldn't get through.

If you are picking up your little one on 29th then get LB to do the last vaccination and she can go on the pavements right away, we have to wait until 22nd March so I am trying to build up his energy by running around the garden.

Last night we tried the crate, he cried for 3 hours solid. I gave up at 1.30am and let him out. I laid on the floor on a sheepskin rug with him, he then started to shred the rug. I was so tired at this point that I put him in his bed (not in the crate) on the floor, covered him with a blanket and shut the door behind me. He slept soundly until 6.45am and I must add there was not one accident to greet me the next morning.

It has been a beautiful sunny day today, he has met two of the neighbours and I put him in his stripy jumper and we played in the garden using the clicker. To make him more interested in the treats I held his lunch off until after we had finished.

Today he has been in his bed in his playpen and only once squelched through the bars (I reckon by next week he will be too big to get through them).

The unconditional love is absolutely wonderful even though he is a bit stinky. He has had a bath yesterday and today I washed him as he stood in a poo (TMI I know). He is on Chudley's puppy food which I have been told isn't great for body smells and I have been sold another one which has less grain in it and I am changing him over slowly and looking forward to a boy that smells of roses. I have read that a totally raw food diet will eradicate any doggy odour but I am not sure I could cope with raw bones.

Anyone must go on check on my young charge who is snuggled up downstairs. Haven't got much housework or cooking done since he arrived!

Oh and I forgot to say that yes he is the teeny weeniest little darling but is a very clever boy who chases me every where. I was ironing this morning and he sat between my feet as I ironed!

rose you're just teasing us now - pics!?

Oh my goodness he does sound ever so cute! Funnily enough my friend was the same, two sleepless nights with her new puppy she was up and down settling him then the breeder advised her to put earplugs in and since then no crying. It sounds just like having a new baby in the house!! Yes she is going to get the 2nd set of vacs done for me. It sounds as if he is settling in well and you are having fun - bar the sleepless bits!

How funny my parents live just around the corner from warwick close in mandeville rd! Small world definitely. I have emailed her anyhow. Look forward to meeting up.

DD put a video on You Tube today, have tried to link it but it wont load on my Ipad. Will link it tomorrow when I can get on the PC. Perhaps if she had spelt dachshund correctly it would have been easier to find!

He is fast asleep, I am not unfortunately. DS is in charge tomorrow morning while I am at work so he can wear him out in the garden.

Insickness, as soon as I hear from LB, I will message you. Or if click on my username you can send me a message.

Let's hope this works if not search 'Baxter mini dachshund puppy'

Off to work now for a rest.

Have just watched the video - oh my goodness, he is sooo sweet! That little face, shiny body, just adorable grin

He is very sleek and shiny. Fast asleep now as he has spent the morning charging round the garden with DS. DS (17) is exhausted!

LadyTurmoil Tue 05-Mar-13 16:23:08

Funnily enough, drove past our local green this afternoon - 2 tiny dachshunds (i think so anyway, could only look quickly!) playing together, looked so sweet. Don't really see many dachshunds around nowadays, was it difficult to find a decent breeder (just being nosy)?

Hi Lady T if you go on the Kennel Club website you can put an email alert on for any breed you are interested in and as soon as pups are registered you will receive an email. That is how we heard. You will also find that a lot of the breeders seem to know each other so if one can't help you they will know someone else who can.

Crufts is this week, maybe that would be another place to go and do some digging. Mine is a miniature dachshund and he is snuggled up fast asleep with the boys whilst they shout at the football. I am totally in love with him already.

Oh my, he is utterly adorable! He looks really strong and energetic! That looks like a good rope toy too, is that a puppy toy? Good name too, was going to ask what you had called him. LB said she would pass my number on anyhow, drop me a text with your email or something and we can get in touch that way. Can't wait to pick ours up now!!
