my gorgeous girl, Foxy, a fawn greyhound, who literally changed my life 6 years ago, had a fall yesterday and after a terrible night spent lying on the floor next to her, I had to ring the vet at 4am who said that there was no hope as she had been trying unsuccessfully to get up for 12 hours. To be fair she was 13 - so a grand age - but I am not being dramatic when I say I do not know how I will live without her. I did speak to the vet yesterday when it happened and she said to see how Foxy went overnight.
She was my best friend and she adored me too. She was my first dog that I had in my own right as an adult.
I have a greyhound boy who is bereft. It was just me and the dogs. No OH or kids.
I cannot stop crying. Or rather wailing.
I have lost my mum and my dad - my dad a year ago. My dogs are my life. This feels like a bereavement of similar magnitude to me.
thanks for reading xxxx

Sad so sorry for your loss

Abra1d · 25/02/2013 14:54

I am sorry. I know how much it hurts. And having lost your parents, your pain must be particularly hard.

I promise that you will be able to look back at Foxy and just feel happy to have had her in your life. The pain will fade.

Be gentle on yourself.

Melissakitkat · 25/02/2013 14:55

So very sorry - remember the good times - at least she is not in pain and she had a lovely life with you - hugs xxx

Floralnomad · 25/02/2013 14:55

So sorry for your loss OP, she sounds like a lovely, brave girl.

It is totally understandable for you to feel so bereaved, be kind to yourself.

Many, many hugs. How absolutely terrible for you. My lovely dog is my first ever and I can't image life without her. It will get better with time - I'm told.

JuliaScurr · 25/02/2013 14:58

So sorry for your loss. It sounds like the loss of Foxy has triggered off memories of other losses; very painful.

Does it help to know that many vets regard it as one of the great privileges of their job to give animals a kind and gentle death? You have done something very loving as your last gift to your beautiful dog.

In time, you will have the good memories as well as this sadness. You will always know you did the very best you could for her.

I know I did the best thing in the circumstances - the only thing - I know that when you get a pet - it is part of the deal that you have to know when it is time but god the pain is terrible - the vet was lovely as was the nurse and I had never met them before as they were the out of hours service. She is at the pet crematorium and I will collect her ashes along with a paw print and fur clipping on Thursday.
Thanks so much. x

So sorry to hear that.

Lots of hugs. x

mistlethrush · 25/02/2013 15:07

I'm still sad about my lovely dog - we had to have her pts in October just 3 wks after going to the vet with a limp - it was bone cancer and it wasn't fair to leave her any longer. We rescued a lurcher 2 wks later. She will never replace our first dog - she will occupy a different place in our hearts in her own right.

It is the one down side of having dogs - they don't stay with us long enough.

needastrongone · 25/02/2013 15:08

Oh I am so sorry, please be kind to yourself. Take some time. Take care.

I am so sorry Sad It is heartbreaking when you love an animal so much and it dies You really think people will think you are silly and not 'get' it but believe me there are lots of people like you,you aren't alone Thankfully you have the other dog who can be some sort of comfort to you and vice versa xx

I'm so so sorry for your loss

She was very lucky to have such a kind and caring owner to spend those 6 years with. Grieve as much as you need to because she was part of your little family.

RedwingWinter · 25/02/2013 16:18

I'm so sorry for your loss Sad

AnameIcouldnotthinkof · 25/02/2013 16:26

So sorry for your loss. I had my darling staffie cross pts a year ago and it was so hard. She will always have a special place in your heart and I promise it will get easier.

big hugs

pigsDOfly · 25/02/2013 17:25

So sorry for your loss. You gave her a good life for 6 years. She was part of your small family and you need to grieve for her for as long as it takes.

Take comfort from the love of your other dog and take care of each other.

Wishing you well. Big hugs

gymmummy64 · 25/02/2013 17:38

So very sorry for your loss. I remember thinking the same when my childhood dog was PTS when I was in my 20s. It does get better I promise and the way you feel now just shows what a wonderful life you gave her as her owner for her last 6 years.

Thinking of you, big hugs
